TOPICS DISCUSSED

This week’s Community Question:

  • Do you think Star Trek would be better if there were fewer creative minds behind the scenes? — Kinda like Lucas & Williams are the two biggest names with Star Wars…
  • Have you played any other Star Trek games besides Star Trek Online? And if so, what’s your favourite?
  • We’re only four episodes into TNG – Did Wesley deserve to have his character spotlighted in such a way so early… compared to, say, Geordi, Worf, or Tasha… ?

He finally embraced the Trekdom in college and spent many hours catching up on the entire multiverse…. instead of studying.

What are we using George Lucas as a role model? George Lucas did not direct Empire or Return.
And look what he did with the other 3.

Disney didnt even use his story for EP VII.

    Just saying.

Star Trek has massively benefited from a diverse mix of creative minds. Just think about the art direction alone on say Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise. It gives each series its own identity and allows us to appreciate them seperately. The problem with that other sci-fi franchise is it doesn’t have that creative diversity. Episode 7 looks and feels almost the same as A New Hope. Some minor changes but it’s basically stormtroopers, light sabers and death stars. Imagine 5 series of that with 5 to 6 seasons per series. Would get boring and quick.

yes the shields failed Kenna but she was trying to key in stuff on a computer that was temporal shielded like a black box if i recall. Maybe she left him a “secret” Message. Maybe it was title “Time in a bottle”

Q2: Have you played any other Star Trek games besides Star Trek Online? And if so, what’s your favourite?

Prior to STO, my favorite Start Trek game was the excellent Fleet Operations mod of Star Trek Armada II. The last news I read was that the Fleet Ops volunteers were working to build a brand new version from the ground up. The up side is that it will not require having an Armada II disc to install it because it is leaving behind all the old 2001 code. The down side is that it is taking forever. I check their site every few months, and if they are still working on it I hope Paramount and CBS will leave them alone.

Before I started playing STO, I played Star Trek: Bridge Commander and Star Trek Voyager Elite Force. Bridge commander had a very enjoyable campaign and even had Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner returning to reprise their roles. there have also been mods released that make the game one of the most accurate starship combat experiences out there and the game’s multiplayer still works to this day. Elite Force also had a good story and all of the Voyager cast came back to reprise their roles. It’s the only first person shooter that I really enjoyed and there are still many active multiplayer servers. Bridge Commander has to be my favorite with Elite Force close behind. fortunately, my fleet still supports games like these and we’ll continue to keep the community alive.

If I am guessing (and a bit remembering) right, Personal Logs were downloaded into the temporal core and I am guessing the krenim guy has found those logs and realised he was married.

Cookie, regarding the plot hole, it was suggested that the other ships engines were older than the Enterprise and in effect he had just given them a tune up.

Ok, love the idea of a star trek drinking game for every time they say captain.

And we definitely need a Kenna Album (hey seriously, do it and sell it on the website)

Didn’t the temporal shielding fail? Hm…I may need to replay that episode!!

Around the ship yes, but not around the data core

In your review of the TNG episode. It was explained that the other ships were of an older design and their systems benefited from improvements. Where as the Enterprise was top of the line and its systems were already efficient.

    Regarding community question 1 –

I don’t think its a case of too many or too few creative people.

I think its really about WHAT each individual contributor creates. You could have a thousand writers with no background in the franchise and end up with a gem, or 1 creative and end up with the star wars prequels.

Its the individual quality of each persons contributions that is key.

With too few people, you end up in situations where they are starting to run out of ideas or write themselves into a corner, with too many you risk dilution beyond recognition.

However, Star Trek is unique as over its 50 successful years it has had hundreds of writers, directors, producers and novelists and is still going.
