The new captain needs qualities that embody the position. I don’t have a specific idea in mind in terms of species or anything particular regarding our modern culture. I mainly need the story and characters to work. Yes, it’s well known that Star Trek has a reputation for pushing boundaries, but that should flow naturally from a diverse production team. Character specifics should be there to make them more robust and be influential yet secondary to storytelling.

NOOOOOOOOOO! I saw the trailer! Its awful! what are they doing!

    Star Trek: Beyond Saving?

    • Rarva on 2015-12-18

I totally Agree. I’m not sure what message they were trying to get across, but whatever that was, is not Trek.

Initial impressions were of a poor, guardians-of-the-galaxy clone with some Fast and Furious mixed in.

Cant say I’m terribly sorry to see that particular enterprise blown up. But I would not put it past them for the whole movie to be some bug McGuffin powered “dream” of some kind.

However, we must remember that the trailer is 1m30s of footage from a 2 hour movie – which isn’t even finished yet. Who knows, Pegg may pull it off…..

But it is hard to ignore how wrong it feels

Honestly, I would like to see Dr Captain Sheldon Cooper in command, the with rest of the BigBang cast as the other bridge crew.

It would be so awesome, my head would explode

Olivia Wilde as a new captain Kirk, a cousin to James Tiberius (can’t recall what became of his brother though). http://bit.ly/1k0T8QC

Whoever becomes captain, it has to be a “Captain capital-C” character. Someone we can identify with, and see the Trek universe through his/her eyes. The captain should NOT be a drama queen with all kinds of flaws and bagage, and a generous dose of Indiana Jones would be appreciated.

Great to have you guys back! Elijah, I knew we of the Silent Majority would be heard! And Cookie, well you never forget your first Cupcake 🙂

Kenna – your analysis was spot on! Two thumbs up.
I enjoyed The Promenade – my wallet less so.;)

      Thx P1, get well Mark.

FOr Captain…Alien. But I would like to see all of the main characters to be non-human. So then the writing can approach all of the social issues of Cultural Identity with a unified nation. Analogues to the melting pot of the US.
It can go even into this issues of presenting a unified front to outsiders of the unified nation while still having internal issues. It can also paint a picture of our culture in new ways that may highlight not only the good but the bad and the funny things too.

Great podcast. I really enjoy getting Cookie and Elijah back. I honestly think that the new captain should be an alien. Perhaps an unjoined trill or other human looking species. This would allow approaching sensitive topics in a different perspective where the taboo can be legitimately normal and that be ok. And because they look close to human it means they are still relatable. It just opens up so many doors.

    • Kenna on 2015-12-15

The problem with an alien “captain” is that it could potentially alienate (pun intended) audiences…but that might be okay if the main characters are more the crew than the captain…Hm…it’s an interesting idea to think through!

I just recently re-watched all of the Next Gen Series and I did not care of that episode. But thinking about it more I think I would like it if it where maybe 10 episodes or more in to the series.

  13. seannewboy on 2015-12-15

So after commenting on Naked now, i imagined a young cookie writing fan fiction about data and being fully functional.

Naked now was just poorly done all around and was definitely done too early in the run. It should have been no sooner than the midpoint of season one.

    Wonderful show everyone.

Who should the new Captain be? Great question, that can really be answered in one word: Human.

Frankly, I don’t care if the new Captain is young or old. I don’t care if they’re Cuban, Afghani, English, Russian, or from the U.S.. I don’t care if they’re a man, woman, or transgender. They just need to be human in a way that, regardless of disposition, is on some level relate able to everyone.

All the great Captains have this intangible. That ability to not only be what we WANT to be, but to reflect who we ARE. As different as each good Captain has been, both in appearance and temperament, that has been true.

I’d also like to echo Kenna’s feelings on writing and production. TNG, arguably the most revered series of the Trek IP, started off very slow. Painfully slow. After a change in management and a creative shuffle, it became the series we all fell in love with. The cast did not change and, frankly, the characters didn’t transform that much either. But they were given conflict that didn’t comprise the characters.

Great show, folks. Keep up the great work!

Elijah, I believe that although he played a Native American on Voyager, that Robert Beltran is indeed Latino.

I’d like to see something different in a captain then we’ve seen before. Maybe a gay character that would have problems with a homophobic crew member. Perhaps a Cardassian/Bajorian captain and first officer would produce some drama and conflict.

    • Kenna on 2015-12-15

The difficulty would be balancing that conflict with the idea of the Roddenberry utopian society…I wonder if there’s space for a society that both has interpersonal conflict AND total equality…?

      • Startrekron on 2015-12-21

Earth is a utopian society but are all the other worlds of the Federation? How do the Klingon and Romulan Empires feel about such things?

  20. smallyoda on 2015-12-14

With regards to who the new captain should be, I think we should remember that when TNG began its seven year run, we had a klingon as part of the bridge crew and in TOS, the federation and the Klingon Empire were in a state of war. Having Worf on the bridge indicated a new found peace. Keeping that in mind, I think it would be interesting to have a Romulan captain. This would indicate a new found peace between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire.
