It’s fun but over nerfed it did not solve the long term problem. Please bring the stat back up to 10% for those lab consoles.

The prospect of finally getting a new star trek series is very exciting to me. now we can finally stop thinking about IF it will happen and look forward to WHEN it will happen. it would be interesting if the show took place in the post nemesis era, or maybe even another century. then you could pretty much start again with less possibility to conflict with the already established cannon. it would be great if the show had some elements of TNG mixed with the political philosophy of TOS. the one thing that I hope they don’t do is place the show in the JJ universe following the reboots. at that point, it wouldn’t really be star trek or at least not the star trek that we’ve all grown to love. there would be to much emphasis on action and less on the story and at that point, it would be to much like Star Wars.

One thing I want: Don’t go “gritty”. Star Trek is set in a utopia, it is not set in a distopia, nor a gritty/realistic future. The moral high ground was a source of strength in every series except DS9, where it was portrayed as a weakness. This was the one thing I disliked about DS9, and what I really hope is not in any future Star Trek. Keep the Federation as a source of inspiration and a nearly (but not quite) impossible ideal to live up to.

Thanks for having Borticus on the show! Those were some great questions and discussions.

I’d like to promote my suggestion for exploration, because the core of it is already in the game code. Champions Online has a system called the Nemesis System. When your character hits level 25 you go to a police computer terminal and are asked to “do research on a new supervillain who is terrorizing Millenium City”. That’s the way the character sees it. In reality you’re going to the character builder and designing a villain with all the same costume options and power choices and you pick from one of three AIs for it (mastermind, brute, and I forget the third). the AI also determines a few dialog options. Finally you pick it’s minions from a selection of attack types and pre-defined villain costumes. These guys then appear as guests in a small number of missions, but there is also a series of missions that are the nemesis appearing for the first time, then comitting some big crimes, then making doomsday weapon, then finally you catch them and lock them away. At that time you can restart the cycle (they escape), or make a new nemesis. This exists in the STO code right now but it is turned off.

Now, imagine if instead of a police computer it was your ship sensors while in orbit of an unidentified system. Imagine if instead of an enemy you were defining an alien for first contact. Then instead of AI you pick “level of development” (primitive, industrial, high tech) and personality (benevolent, pragmatic, malevolant), and use the alien generator to make their appearance/uniform. Instead of picking powers, select damage type from weapons and boom, done.

Run through a few scripted missions and have a climax that instead of involving a doomsday device involves the decision whether or not they are ready to be introduced to the federation/empire/republic and if so on what terms (for example, possibly enslaved for the empire). Then you make a new one and start the process over.

A good portion of this, as I mentioned, is already in the game code because it was a part of Champions. I’ve seen many other great suggestions, but none that leverage existing game code quite like this.

Maybe I opened a horrible can of worms by restarting the massive discussion on the topic. Sorry.

Also, *squeee* thanks for the shoutout! It’s been fun catching up.

Im loving the song bit at the front, wonderfully done.
As for the new series, i just hope they do a good job casting and writing.
In the new episode series i think we are going to deal with the empire, just to end up finally having to full on engage the tholians.
    Better out than IN!

    Wonderful show everyone.

Plain and simple, I would want to see the Enterprise “F” from STO in the new show. The show does not need to revolve around it but I think this is a must. I mean wasn’t the Odyssey Class listed as the official Enterprise “F”?

What! ONLY 1 THING WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE!

You guys are too mean! How is that a choice!! I mean there is so much they could do! I just hope what ever it is it will tie in with STO some how!

  12. Wardcalis on 2015-11-09

For the new series I think 1 thing we can all agree with, especially in our current era,i s that the new TV series absolutely must have is scientific plausibility.

Beginning in the 2nd season of TNG and moving forward Rick and Gene made a point of trying to explain the ‘how’ to the sciences of startrek. He went as far as hiring a science advisor from NASA to work with the writers. To this day while trek science does at times take some rather extended liberties with science it is still heavily based on the notion that everything is still plausible and not for lack of a better term some fantasy made up off the top of someone’s head. The scientific notions in startrek are at least grounded in plausible factual science.

To me this is the largest thing separating startrek from many other sci-fi shows out there. And it’s why I hate the JJ movies, he completely ignored established trek science.

Hey Guys! I’m loving the show, as always. Firstly, I want to say that I agree with Kenna: TNG, FTW! But the one thing I am HOPING is included in the new show is the return to tackling controversial political issues. TOS had episodes confronting civil rights issues, and TNG had references to the cold war — dealing with an elusive enemy. Modern society seems to be heading back into the territory of a “dangerously savage child-like race.” Modern social issues need to be front and center in this new show. This is what makes Star Trek… Star Trek. End rant.

Great show as always, you guys rock. I’m writing to you today because there’s something that I feel needs to be addressed. Cecily Adams, the woman who played Quark and Rom’s mother Ishka on DS9, still is not on the memorial plaque. I see on tribble they’ve added Bruce Hyde, a man I’ve never heard of who played a character I had to look up and still don’t remember in two episodes of the original series. George Coe, who was also in only a single episode playing a character with less significance overall than Ishka was added almost immediately after his death. Cecily is the daughter of Don Adams, known for his work as Maxwell Smart and Tennessee Tuxedo, and the wife of Jim Beaver who is known for his roles on Deadwood and Supernatural. If Flying Spaghetti Monster forbid anything happened to Jim, he would likely be added to the plaque as he had appeared briefly in the Enterprise episode Broken Bow. And yet his wife isn’t. You can bring this issue to a much wider audience than I can, an audience that includes the devs themselves. Moogie needs to be honored.
