Greetings, Admirals! You’re listening to EPISODE 222 OF PRIORITY ONE PODCAST, the premier Star Trek Online podcast! This episode was recorded on Thursday, May 14th, 2015 and made available for download on Monday, May 18th, 2015 at PriorityOnePodcast.com!

This week, Guest Host Kenna Treks Out the Nexus — but, not the one you’re thinking of from Star Trek Generations. In STONews, more controversial changes hit Holodeck with the retirement of Lohlunat Pearls and, subsequently, any other “free ship currency” you might have been saving up for the yearly events. Then, our Fiction Writer, Jake brings us another Foundry Review now that it’s back up and running on Holodeck. Of course, as always, before we wrap things up, we open Hailing Frequencies for your incoming messages.

PRIORITY ONE’S DELTA RECRUITMENT GUIDE!

TOPICS DISCUSSED

Micro-Review of the new Iconian Resistance Space Set

The “Meta” of the game is always evolving. With every new content patch and expansion we get new reputations and gear to play with. Today i want to briefly talk about what will be a potentially significant shift in ship building.

The Iconian Resistance Space set consists of 4 pieces. Deflector, Impulse Engine, Warp/Singularity Core, and Resilient Shield. Individually, each of the parts of the set are extremely tanky; probably the tankiest set in the game currently. However the 3p and 4p set bonuses are what are getting some people very excited.

Before we go into the set bonuses, a quick description of the individual parts:

  • The Iconian Resistance Deflector Array comes with increased Kinetic Resistance, extra power to shields, improved shield healing, increased hull and shield hit points, and at Ultra-Rare: [SciCdr] which reduces science cool downs by 10%.
  • The Iconian Resistance Hyper-Impulse Engines comes with increased Defense, extra power to engines, increased Energy Damage resistance when at full throttle, and at Ultra-Rare: [+CRes] which gives increased resistance to control effects..
  • The Iconian Resistance Hyper Injection Warp Core comes with extra power to engines, increased max engine power, bonus Engine power to Shields, Efficiency, Transwarp cooldown reduction, Hot Restart of disabled weapons subsystem, and at Ultra-Rare: [AMP]
  • The Iconian Resistance Resilient Shield Array reduces all energy damage to shields by 20%, Hot Restart of disabled shield subsystems, removes 1 debuff every 10s, and at UR: [REG], increased shield regen.

All of these are very nice and make for a very tough ship… but, it’s the 3p set bonus that really shines.

When firing energy weapons, 5% chance: +15% All Energy Damage for 8s to allies with 10km. Stacks 3 times.

What does this mean? If you are running this 3p set, yourself, any team mates, pets, friendly platforms, targetable torpedoes, etc..  within 10km, will get up to a +45% (category 1) energy damage increase; which is a +7% effective damage increase. This will stack if other members of your team are also running this 3p. This is significantly better than the current “Best in Slot” DPS meta of 2p Nukara+Romulan Engine.

Recommended setup would be Deflector, Engine, and Shield.

The 4p set bonus is an activated ability that grants extra damage, hull HP, and speed for 30s to yourself and friendlies, with a 2 minute cooldown. This ability does not stack with itself, so only 1 person should activate it at a time.

However to run the 4p you have to equip the Warp/Singularity core, which due to the way it balances power, and the cost of upgrading it to UR to get [AMP], is not really recommended.

For most builds the Fleet Spire or Dilithium Mine cores are superior. There might be some builds and/or situations where the 4p set might be beneficial.

*Although some of us are excited about this new set, we’re also very worried about the lag this might cause….

I’m not a fan of the lohlunat change. Getting ahead on events like this was my “vacation insurance”. I’ve saved event tokens so that maybe I wouldn’t miss a reward if I couldn’t play during half an event. Now there’s no way for me to do this. Thumbs down to this change.

Also in response to Elijah’s comment, I’ve been flying the Sarr Theln ever since I got it. I’m still flying it.

Special events like the summer event are designed for player retention. They target players who have wandered away from the game but haven’t completely quit. Cryptic lures these players back in game with an exclusive ship and hopes they’ll be re-engaged by the content they missed (and spend money on new ships they haven’t gotten yet).

The way the summer event was working up till now, players could grind one year when they were fully engaged in the game and then spend 15 minutes the next year when they potentially weren’t. That’s not enough time to re-addict a player to that sweet sweet space-crack.

I think Kenna did a great job, however all her lines were scripted, she needed to be included in the chatter more. How can we know if she’s a good fit if all we get to hear are scripted lines? UNLEASH THE KRAKE… err KENNA!

On the lohlunat pearls, so far only one of my 60s had any saved up, so I’ve mostly gotten the tech upgrade kits. While the emotes are interesting those dilithium-free kits are a time saver, and that pays me back for my time. I’m betting the new source of emotes will be something I can buy on the AH. Might be a losing gamble on my part, but one I’m willing to take. I only bought enough emotes for my main.

On the ships and how it was handled, I think Cam’s point about his preview is the really big one that I will miss. Everyone mentions that people don’t fly the event ships. This is not true. We all fly them… DURING THE EVENT and right after it. Then we put them away until next year. Because of the change, I (and everyone like me who saved up) can’t fly the new ship during the first weeks of the event. This reduces people seeing it and wanting it. Which can’t be good for Cryptic’s participation metrics. I have no evidence but anecdotal, but I can say that people seeing the ships in sector space and queues definitely leads to talk about them and always positive talk. Just reading the blog and seeing screenshots isn’t the same. I’m sure previews like Cam’s and other youtubers too lead many people to start the grind that would have skipped it. Losing these early previews will absolutely hurt participation, though there’s no way to know how much.

I still love the Risa event and can’t wait for it to start. Like the winter event I enjoy simply hanging out on the map and goofing around being utterly unproductive but grinning like an idiot.

    • Elijah on 2015-05-20

Wait… You know we’re all scripted, right? Always… We have shownotes we read off the page.

      • GavinRuneblade on 2015-06-05

All of it? Because sometimes you sound like you’re reading and sometimes you sound like you’re talking. I always assumed you were 90% scripted and left some time for chatting/ad libbing.

I have to disagree with Cam. The game mechanics for the free ship was never thought-out properly by the development team. It was designed as a seasonal event, and it was never seen as something they would extend each year. The fact that they did created the perception this was something they would do ongoing.

I for one never expected that the currency would be the same each year. The fact that it did was a bonus.

Where I agree with Cam is in the perception, and the lost opportunity to engage the fans. Once again we’re faced with another nerf – regardless of the reasoning behind it.

One good thing was Salami Infernos response – make the ships account wide. very nice, but one has to wonder if it was another marketing misstep instead of an opportunity.

    Hi All,

    Nice Job Kenna.

I don’t like the changes to the Summer event. It is going to lower participation in the content, I think.

My saved up pearls went to purchasing the VR mats I have had a hard time getting a hold of. Mostly Plekton.

As for my Risian SHips, The Luxury Cruiser usually gets a bit of play on my Engineer guys. It was the primary one for my Fed ENg til I picked up the Intel Ship. I found the Lux Cruiser to be a very tough and manuverable ship.

Loved the episode everyone. Welcome Kenna.

I got spec points for my main character with lohlunat pearls. Personally i like this change. Although i dont think it will do what they want it too.

Love the video and explanation of the iconian space gear.

Thank you for your service Elijah.

Interesting show, thank you for it.

I appreciate and share Cam’s perspective on retiring Lohlunat Pearls. I collected extra of that, and every event currency, which meant that I ground every event from start to finish.

I would have preferred that my current pearls be grandfathered into the new currency.

Given the current currency state there is no motivation for me to stay in the event past any unique event items. As for the trade in store I am concerned about turning my pearls into specialization points as I do not want to spend any of them on the Command Specialization, as I it is not as good as the Pilot specialization (which I am 5 points from filling). I even regret the two points I put into Command Specialization.

Research Points would be a welcome addition to the store, as I will not pay pearls for Tech points.

  14. JasonH on 2015-05-18

Great show guys. Kenna was excellent.

I’m not upset with the change with the pearls being retired. They offered us very useful things to trade them in for.

During the winter event if you completed a featured episode they gave you 400 Qmendations i believe. If you did it on your alts and waited till next year you would have 800 saved up per toon. Sounds like a major exploit.

Exclusive rewards should be exclusive. It rewards the people who play during the events.

    Take care.

  15. StarChaser on 2015-05-18

Thank you, Priority One. For all of your work and the great shows you put out.

I did not get that many Lohlunat Pearls during the Summer Event, but now I wished I did. The summer event ships did not have my interest. Now I wished I had gathered more pearls because the buyback rewards interest me far more than the ships. For future events, I would like to see these rewards remain as alternatives to buying a ship that I am not going to use.

While I myself may not have much interest in the ships, I do recognize that others like them, so I do think it is important to keep them alive in some way. Maybe in the form of a T6 variant, much like the Jem’Hadar Strike Ship is the update of the Attack Ship.

  16. Enahs Dax on 2015-05-18

    Great Show as usual,
Would like to say that your two guest host did an awesome job.

I myself, do the same thing Cam does, after earning this years ship I start on working for next years. This was a good mechanic for me. I also see why they changed this. I have a friend in-game that ran 9 characters to earn 1000 pearls each. His idea was to run one race every years. This would allow him to get the ship on the first day this year on all characters. He could do this for the next nine years. It is an exploit but he did do his grind for them all in one year. I like the change in the summer event. I would love to the ability to purchase these buy back options continue after you earn your ship.

I did end up buying one spec point and a few upgrades with last years lefts overs.

I don’t support the idea of retiring ships, i do think they are outdated, hence why I don’t fly either one of them.

I will not be getting anything from the buy back store, the reason being is I don’t have any pearls to trade in.

I haven’t played the summer event before I joined the game last year; apparently just after the summer event ended.

It is a shame that I won’t be able to get the Risian Luxury Cruiser.

Awesome show, do you guys gold plate these things to make them so good all the time?

I’m actually very upset about the changes to the summer event. I was never able to do the previous years events so I never got the Risian Corvette. I was really looking forward to getting it.

The new Iconian set sounds nice but I fly torp boats and there just isn’t enough of a benefit to make me dump my Adapted Maco 2pc and Counter Command Deflector.

Kenna did great, she has my vote.

  24. Bushwookie on 2015-05-18

Hey guys, great show as always! I thought Kenna did a great job! Between Kenna’s British accent, Cookie’s sultry (after nerve tonic) voice, Cam and Jayce’s deep soothing voices, I see what your planning. Priority One Pillow Talk! Bushwookie approves.

Cam and Jayce should start a “build factory” type of segment. Helping new and returning players with builds from all the new and old gear. maybe some Q&A. Just a thought.

As far as the Lohlunat Pearls, I am ok with it. I will gladly trade in my extra pearls for some tech upgrades or much needed VR mats. the prices are very reasonable. Pearls were fun to collect and didn’t take that long to get anyway.

On the “RISE-e-an” Corvette, I love mine. It’s a fast, fun, hit and run ship. I like to use it as a torpedo boat and zoom in and out of firefights. Elijah would like it if he still was an escort kind of guy.
