Subscription Box1Greetings, Captains! You’re listening to Episode 183 of Priority One Podcast, the premier Star Trek Online podcast! This episode was recorded on Thursday, July 17th, 2014 and published on Monday, July 21st 2014 at PriorityOnePodcast.com!

Jayce returns from his visit on Ceti Alpha V just in time to join Cookie and Elijah for a review of Star Trek Online’s Season 9.5 release!

This week, we forgo  #TrekItOut and jump right in to STONews because Season 9.5 has hit holodeck!! That means, the new Crafting System is now on Holodeck and we’re here with our first impressions. Also, the Xindi Lock Box slipped through with this update and that includes new ships, genetic resequencers, BoFFs and DoFFs, weapons, and much more!

Later in the show, Al Rivera has some serious competition when we’re joined by User Interface Artist Thomas “TheCrypticCat” Marrone to talk about the UI changes in Season 9.5 — including the creation of the new Crafting system as well as the standardization of the new Odyssey Uniform. Towards the end of the show, we’ll open Hailing Frequencies to see what’s incoming from you — our listeners.

    HI P1….
Enjoyed the interview with Cryptic Cat. Interesting to hear him talk about Star Trek Online instead of reading his tweets.

    As for the questions…

Q1. None of my Characters are using carriers anymore. When I had used them, the mines they dropped seemed really ineffectual at best.

Q2. Before 7/21 I would have said that I had great anticipation for what it will be for me. The fun things that I will be making accross all of my toons. But now, they have killed my enthusiasm for the crafting system and the game. I am not looking forward to waiting for 205 days to max out ONE school. And that’s assuming no dilithium spent and I get all of the blue mats that I need every day. SO I went from working on all 6 toons leveling crafting to just one leveling crafting and all the other guys funneling all of thier mats to him. This change has made sure that casual players will NOT be part of the crafting community because they will have to wait a year to just get one school up to the point that they can make useful items in One School. It really sucks for me, because I really want to enjoy this game and not work at it.

I feel i need to post a second replay and address a lot of players furious, though understandable, frustration….

before the patch on Tuesday players were able to slot more than one of the same experience 20-hour mission. and although this would be fine in a reputation to me… It’s VERY cheaty for those that have amassed millions of refined Dilitium as those players can then proceed to just keep clicking the “finish” buttons… effectively insta-popping huge chunks of the crafting system just because they have the dilitium to…

Again i know this frustrates players but it’s also giving players who are feeding cryptic’s wallets an even further and unfair advantage to abuse the dilithium finisher option and suddenly max-tier in less than a month while others are slowly grinding out their own progression….

Yes the “pay to finish” system is a bit iffy at the moment, but give it time to slowly become part of the game guys…. If the issue with abusing the big XP mission continues Cryptic may just remove it all together and it’s not their fault… It’s the players who game the systems just to game the system. You shouldn’t hate cryptic for making sure some rich jerk off can’t instantly be level 20 of everything just because “money.”

I personally do not understsand the argument. As far as im concerned if they want to, let them. I personally run extra races every season event, like the recent jetpack course, during the summer event. Why should people be upset when some year i get the whatever on day one. For that matter why should i be mad if someone wants to spend hundreds of dollars on lol bundles or finish now’s, or just play the dil content that much to finish the runs over a few hours. Bottom line, i just can’t see being upset over people paying money to get ahead in a non money making activity. No one will be getting anything other than personal gratification on these activities, if they need it let them. I am just fine doing my 20 hour missions.

    • Berthulf on 2014-07-29

Okay, in principle I would agree, but there is an issue being overlooked here:

A “FNP” (or Finish Now Player) that has the funds and inclination to hit “Finish Now” is going to, regardless of how many multiples of a project can be slotted. This player will complete approx one Research project per 5-10 seconds, regardless of whether they can be run simultaneously or only individually.

Now, compare that to your Average Joe Player (“AJP”).

Your “AJP” doesn’t want to live in the game, but wants to have fun playing it. They don’t farm dilithium or spend extraordinary amounts of RL money on it. The “AJP” therefore cannot afford to hit “Finish Now” on more than one or two Research Project, total.

      What’s the difference?

If “AJP” can slot a Research Project multiple times, an “AJP” won’t much worry how long it’ll take take to level up a school compared to an “FNP”. Certainly it won’t be as fast, but our “AJP” doesn’t mind because they’re playing the game and having fun at the same time as leveling their crafting.

On the other hand, if our “AJP” can only slot each Research project once, the gap between the “FNP” and “AJP” will suddenly jump dramatically, to potentially five times what it was before.

Don’t get me wrong here. I’m all for limiting the Research projects, but it has to be a fair limit. I would suggest that scrapping the “Finish Now” button on the Research Projects and restrict it to actual crafting projects would be one way to balance this, but that’s not my decision.

Hi guys. Yet another awesome podcast; loved listening.

Q1: I have a variety of hangar pets, but only two of my characters really use them. I have the R.Adm Orion FDC and the Arkif TCW. I currently use the Scorpions in both as they seem to work slightly better for those characters. They’re both KDF faction characters as I didn’t get on with carriers on my Fed toons.

Q2. There is no way I will bother to complete any of the RnD Schools, at least not as they stand now. Quite frankly, I’m still angry with the way that Cryptic have instigated the new crafting system: it is certainly better than the old system in some ways, but the rewards quality chances are unfairly low and it’s far too hard to level it up. I have been around since closed Beta and have been playing regularly since F2P; with 10 toons and only playing for approximately 8-12 hours per week, I still haven’t completed the Omega Taskforce reputation with all my toons, the new RnD Is going to take for EVER. Totally not worth it and still a punitive system. Don’t get me wrong, I can see the potential, but it is a VERY long way from achieving it.

A big thank you to Thomas for the new DOff/RnD UI; I really like it! That said, I still preferred the pie charts to the bar charts, but I like what’s been done. As Kirk says to the President at the end of ST:VI; “People can be very frightened of change.”

Points of note for this episode:

The use of white for flag/commanding officers in Star Trek began with the flag officers in Phase II, or The Motion Picture as it later became, which itself harks back to Real Life Navies.

Flag officer dress uniforms in the Real Life Navies are just normal officer uniforms, though they often have extra ‘flashy bits’, like lanyards and/or braid. These items could be added to the chest/shoulder-pad/wrist-attach options rather than as new uniform jackets, which would make them usable with a variety of uniforms.

Finally, on the topic of Uniform. I’m holding out hope (still) that we may (one day) be able to show accolade medals on our toons. I would LOVE a uniform drop-down option that allows you to select one of a toons completed accolades and display the appropriate ribbon and/or medal on the toons chest, opposite their combadge. Such as the Superior Service Star. All these accolades have 2d artwork already after all and I’d love to see it in-game more. That and less restriction about makeup, hair, uniform and stance options for male toons. Why is there no guyliner or loose long hair options?! Why can’t my male toons use the Cute stance?!?!

Loved the show, kudos to the fans on getting the all 3 to Vegas!

CQ1) Nope, I have Scorpions, drones, swarmers, and JHAS pets.
CQ2) It’s gonna be a long grind, especially since the new rule of only 1 20 hr per school at a time. Nice idea, horrible execution. Once the system is totally in place it wont be bad, but still nor great.

Hey guys, I’ve used the carrier pets with mines alot when I was trying to find the best pet on my Klingon. From what I saw, they use the mines but the mines weren’t noticable. I daw one pop a mine 12km away from my target! But that was before the improvement of carrier pets. As for crafting, its a side thing for me. The only reason I might level it up is for the Aegis set. Its better than the old crafting system. Keep up the amazing work guys.
P.S. I’M NOT CAPTAIN GEKO (or however you say it) HOW DARE YOU!

  10. Sunseahl on 2014-07-22

I agree with Sanoskyrat. Mines from Elite Slavers are just spat out as soon as the cooldown is done with no real intelligent placement. With this i’m not really too hopeful about the Aquatic’s pets mine placement either.

Elite Slavers are also very weak compared to most other Elite pets when it comes to surviveability. Obviously this was meant to “balance” the ability of slavers to steal. Sadly this mechanic is very rarely as effective as it’s made to sound. With so many commodities that the Slavers can steal, along with Direct EC, the addition of Contraband on Advanced Slavers, and Gamma Quadrant Commodities on the Elite variants it’s simply not worth having such weak combat pets when the raiding check-sum of getting commodities of any type is once ever 15 seconds.

  11. Tobias@colonelsanderz on 2014-07-22

My experience with the crafting system up until the 7-22-14 patch was good. Not happy that all the features included that Al Rivera discussed in his interview with you guys (#179) weren’t included, but overall pleased with the revamp and proposed upcoming additions. That was yesterday, this is today. Cryptic’s recent changes to the crafting research projects now being limited to one project per school, per day has effectively killed any desire to continue with crafting PERIOD. They took a mechanic out that would have let us reach lvl 20 in a single school within 81 days max. That would be twice the amount of time needed Al Rivera specified it would take i.e. taking a rep system from 0 to max (40 days). Now with the current system it will take 105 days to reach lvl 15 in your primary school, and an additional 240 days (345 total days) to reach lvl 20. I’m going to have to call mulligan on this system until this heinous change is reversed or seriously addressed immediately. On a side note for the Priority One crew… I dont know how you guys feel about this, but I would be outraged if someone came onto my show and flat out lied to my face and, to the public. There have been no formal statements on this very controversial patch, save the patch notes and the eerily familiar silence on Cryptic’s side of the mic. Cheers all

I always enjoy your podcast. You guys do an excellent job and are one of the most professional sounding, after editing of course ;0). podcasts out there.

I had the opportunity while I was packing up to move, to be able listen to the live broadcast. I found it very interesting to hear the show live as compared to how I usually listen to the re-mastered version.

Congrats on making it to Vegas! Have fun for those of us who are not able to attend.

On the R&D system. First, wow Skiffy, that is a whole lot of dil to drop in the game. Overall, the new system is better than what was available before. However, I agree with Skiffy and Jayce on the higher levels needing some sort of advantage or benefit for the time and resources put in to get to that level.

With the recent update making only one 20 hour project per school is a step in the wrong direct in forcing us to us dil even more. If we want to concentrate on one school with our 20 hour projects, that should be up to the player. This is a slap in the face of those of us that really want to advance with R&D without pay to win in a reasonable amount of time.

I agree with sanokskyrat on the slaver/KDF issue and lack of love.

Hello you the P1 Nation. I am going to offer some feedback to the questions for this week finally.

Question #1 – Sadly I only have one carrier on all my toons. That carrier being the Obilisk Carrier that I got from the featured episode when 8.5 went liver(forgive me for the spelling.) As such I do not play with the pets that have mines or even use the Carrier pets.

#2 – From what I have seen and done in the new crafting, I like it. I have played World of Warcraft and was a master crafter in several different schools on different toons. I only have a few things that I find noteworthy and might need to be addressed. One is how the UI is a little to ‘clunky.’ By this I mean that some of the projects that you want to work on, need to be re-organized a little better. I would also make the schools a little bugger on the left side of the UI, but I know that you all can not do much with it. Just an idea saw.

One is how the UI is a little to ‘clunky.’ By this I mean that some of the projects that you want to work on, need to be re-organized a little better. I would also make the schools a little bugger on the left side of the UI, but I know that you all can not do much with it. Just an idea saw.

great stuff in this but i agree that the crafting from 15-20 takes the piss and i think many players wont bother with it. i dont think i will because of the cost in time n dilth. i can see this latest update being ignored like the borked loadouts.

Great show as always and just for the record i listen to it not live because it does funny things and cuts out but do download it at 12am and listen to 2 am before i go to bed. So yeah I don’t mind losing sleep to listen to you guys.

Cookies name should be “COOKIES’ Lower decks!”

I WAS GOING TO WRITE crafting is not soooo bad. but patch notes went up overnight saying that they would change what you can research with the XP. NO MORE ONLY ONE TYPE! Not happy they are taking choice away which will make it harder to get one to one level sooner. And question can u get ultra rare on mark II or the other levels gear? i thought XII was the only one. So fair from my mind right now.

As for the slavers, its a total rip off! they SPAM the mines but are sooooo weak beacuse there ment to steal contraband but this has been nerft so much they dont steal any more then 3 or 4 per hour IF that and they get destroyed all the all the time. its one thing that kills it for me playing KDF and i used them alot back in the day. now they dont do DPS and dont steal stuff. its one think i would like you guys call the devs on. Please give a voice to us poor KDF’s. 🙁

Also as for Duty officers what some people dont know that some missions which let you do ANY OFFICER give you a better chance for crit as long as there purple. For example the basic con officer one does better with the test breen reward from season 6 who has just the skills but is not a con officer. Likewise with the cluster missions after the chain reward you only need a purple or a blue dipl and the rest should be purple officers with the skills. this takes your chances to crit from 20% to 34% which is a huge difference.

106 days of doing the 20hrs a day 6000crafting xp. With the new patch notes showing that you will only be able to do one per skill per 20hrs. (this is figured at 24hr cycle cause well life happens) Is well that for one school.

When it comes to the new crafting system, I have had no issues with it on Holodeck. In fact I welcome STO’s new system. I come from Final Fantasy XI whose crafting system is bizarre. On Final Fantasy XI, you have to face a certain way depending on your element crystal, then go opposite of it’s weakeness depending on the in game lunar phase and day of the week.

See why STO’s system is so much more simple? I also want to thank Cryptic and Thomas for the work they did in the Oddy Uniform standardization, and Thanks to P1 for being the best. Have fun in Vegas!

Wow. Laughing out loud! (Fixed some typo)

I can’t believe my comment was mentioned on Priority One. I understand how you feel and as stated using Foundry as gap content. That’s great as long as the Foundry missions are review and/or spotlighted.

Here is the but part. I still don’t think it’s a replacement for procedural generated worlds. If Genesis is a problem update Genesis to be a bit more sophiscated.

    1. Open up those sectors with procedural generated clusters and allow players to explore them.
    2. Add more variables and content to procedural Generated worlds.
    (ex. 1. variable enemy groups,
    2. variable groups fighting each other)

    3. Base procedural worlds base of the direction of the game.
    (ex. Iconians artifacts)

NOTE: I will come back to this point after I done it myself and shown it can be done.
