I’m beginning to not be a big fan of STO and Orci. I received a ban on the Star Trek Online Forums for so called impersonating a Cryptic/PWE employee. In other words, a ban because I expressed my feelings about the game which seems to be touching a nerve. Very similiar to Orci in a way. It seems Orci, Abrams, and now STO do near want to hear the opinions of the Star Trek fan base.

At this point, I don’t care if Orci is the director.

Star Trek is effectively dead. They already threw away the entire Original Series, TNG, and DS9. And yes, I do think the scripts for 2009 and Into Darkness had a lot of stupid in them; far too much stupid to ‘rebuild’ the Trek universe as seems to be their intent.

With that said, I’ve seen lots of Trek fans (like myself) act like completely belligerent assholes towards the writers and director of 2009 and Into Darkness, and it doesn’t surprise me at all that someone got into a fight on the internet with them

A lot of Trek fans talk TO them like they’re inhuman monsters. Yes, I think they can be kinda shitty writers with terrible visions for what Trek should be (kid Kirk jumping from a stolen car in slow-mo), but the fandom can act just as irrationally as that.

Take that “Oh noes, Khan’s a white guy now” remark. Yes, Khan was a Eastern Indian character being played by a Latino and nobody cared. Replace him with a white guy and the SJWs loose their freaking minds. Apparently racism now days means “race doesn’t matter”, and the non-racist viewpoint is “all brown people are interchangeable, but white guys aren’t.” Awesome, I can totally see that being part of Gene’s idealistic future.

To be honest, as far as the story goes in this reboot or whatever you want to call it, the damage is done. To me we’ve had too many plot holes and broken Trek lore in the first two, it will be hard to write a story, let alone direct one that can right these wrongs (unless Orci uses a “Dallas Dream Year”).

These new Trek films had SO MUCH POTENTIAL! All they had to do was their research to make sure they were telling a true Star Trek story, not breezing over the lore just to create something flashy. For sure they want to go after the blockbuster returns, but they still could have done it and stayed true to Trek.

So all in all, whether I like Orci or not, I think he’s in a difficult position to get anything right now that Jar Jar Abrams has borrowed the Star Trek films and brought them back all wrecked. But, like Tony I will pay my $16 (expensive here in Australia) to go and see it at the cinema, then probably have a rant about why they made Andorians purple or something.

AAARGH! Why did you have to mention Transformers 2? Anticipating what Orci is going to do to our IP is like playing kiss-or-dare with a Jurassic Park velociraptor. I’m terrified, but he does know a lot about trek. Thank Kirk for things like Axanar. Renegades looks good too, but OMG, how epic does Prelude to Axanar look already! Saw a pic of Richard Hatch in his costume for it last week (with his funky kdf communicator) and almost passed out from my geek-gasm!

Wonderful show, thanks to V’Lor for joining in.

As to st3,i will wait and see, not encouraged though.

My first instinct is wait and see, however after seeing what those monsters did to the GREATEST Star Trek villain EVER in Star Trek Into Darkness and considering Orci’s active hatred of Star Trek fans I am beginning to think Tommy Wiseau would be a better choice. Personally I want Jonathan Frakes in charge with Greg Cox to write the story.

    REBUTTAL!

Let me just say that I despise Orci for what he said to the fan base. It was a very poor way to handle criticism, I was not apologizing for him at all in my article. This is actually a beautiful opportunity if you think about it. The burden of proof is ENTIRELY on him. He gave us all these excuses as to why the scripts were written the way they were. He deserves the chance to put up or shut up. We ALL deserve a chance to prove or redeem ourselves when we mess up.

One of two things is going to happen: 1.) Orci will do an amazing job and give us something we can be proud of, it will give us an honest new era of Trek, 2.) He will fail. It will be a spectacular failure that makes the destruction of the Hobus star look like Locutus’s laser pointer and he will prove himself, beyond a doubt, to be the a-hole he showed himself to be when he raged at fans. Paramount will shelve the series and CBS can try to salvage the franchise in the midst of Star-Wars-apolooza.

The only real way to fix this public relations train wreck he created is to have him prove once and for all where his loyalties lie; with the heart of the franchise or with Michael Bay blockbuster effects. Asking anyone else to do it is like throwing a Klingon into a group of Pakleds and expecting him or her to direct an opera.

Yes. Cookie. Clever girl. Again i feel that this shows the difference between CBS and Paramount. Just Saying. CBS still cares and wants the ‘gift’ too do well.

    An absolute disaster for sure.

I changed my graphics again like you guys said. But i still have that jump back thing happening. I go forward then stop then jump back just a little bit. How do i fix that?

As for the Net just a few days a go turns out that the new Australian government is trying to do the same thing… but wasn’t going to tell anyone and was trying to get it done very soon. The crazy budget of austerity was not bad enough for no good reason (we have a triple A credit rating) this stuff goes down. I can not tell you have pissed i am. Hulk smash. Sigh.

  18. Woody_Valley on 2014-05-26

I would give Orci a chance, but since he can’t handle criticism, as we all know, he would need to get it right. Both in story and direction.

If he doesn’t get it right, you won’t see Orci or Bad Robot doing big budget, block buster films for a while.

I wonder if R2-D2 makes a appearance in ST3….yeah stupid question.

    Good Show Guys and Cookie.

In response to the “fan rage” regarding Orci directing, I think it’s appropriate to quote the TOS Changeling episode computer Nomad: “Non Sequitur. You’re facts are uncoordinated.”

Let me start by saying I’m not an Orci apologist. I had problems with the writing and huge plot holes in the last Trek film and didn’t like Transformers (Orci didn’t have anything to do with Transformers 2 as appeared to be stated in the podcast). However, I think a lot of conclusions are being made based on “non sequitur” facts and assumptions. The first being that he was a complete jerk on some trek forum. While it may speak to his character, it says nothing about whether or not he can write, direct or knows trek. Lots of Hollywood personalities are complete jerks and still produce great material that we all love. It’s a non sequitur. Second, his lack of directing experience. I can point to a number of directors who helmed big budget films with little or no experience and came away with great success. Ridley Scott and David Fincher come to mind. In addition, pointing to successful directors such as Frakes without mentioning their abysmal flops such as Thunderbirds and Star Trek Insurrection is really having your “facts uncoordinated.”

In the end, Orci is the studios choice. He may be a complete novice or he may have experience than we may be aware of. Abrams has may have been grooming him on the Trek sets for all we know. The bottom line is that you are making a lot of assumptions backed up by things that don’t speak to the man’s abilities. The only thing you can comment on with any real evidence to back it up is his writing and that wasn’t even touched on.

My advice, dial down the fan rage and wait to see if the guy can carry the water.
Until then, all you’re doing is assuming the worst based on groundless accusations.
