Subscription Box1Greetings, Captains — and Feliz Cinco de Mayo! You’re listening to Episode 172 of Priority One Podcast, the premier Star Trek Online podcast! This episode was recorded on Thursday, May 1st, 2014 and published on Monday, Cinco de Mayo, 2014 at PriorityOnePodcast.com!

Brace yourselves, Captains! This episode is going to be a doozey! Clocking in a just over 2-hours, this episode is full of Star Trek and Star Trek Online goodness! For starters, this week we Trek Out an on-site interview with Star Trek Alums, Anthony Montgomery (Helmsman Travis Mayweather – Star Trek: Enterprise) and Robert Picardo (The Doctor – Star Trek: Voyager) from the Creation Entertainment Star Trek NJ Convention!

In STONews, we have a surprise guest revisiting the show to help correct a few errors in last week’s episode 171 of Priority One Podcast. If you can appreciate Elijah being p0wnd, then this is not a STONews you’re going to want to miss.

Later, in our Community Spotlight segment, we interview some of the cast and crew of Star Trek: Equinox — an independent film project telling the ongoing story of Captain Ransom of Star Trek: Voyager. And of course as always, we’ll open hailing frequencies and see what’s incoming from you — our listeners.

Just a note about the Borg.

They operate toward the fulfilment of one purpose: to “add the biological and technological distinctiveness of other species to [their] own… [in pursuit of] perfection”. The concept of perfection is the unifying idea at the core of the Borg.

1 – The undine ships should not have been in a lockbox at the start of the new undine season, just saying.
2 – JJ could not do any worse than SW ep 1.
3 – Havent tried the new stuff yet.

Thanks to all the guests, very nice to hear from them. Great show.
Tapman has a point, if you can create a station with a whole human biome to practice getting into starfleet academy (voyager), you should be able to figure out you are being played. Not to mention that the borg pretending to be other races is kind of bizarre behavior for them.

The Borg is great with adapting and it’s been said. They use other races technologies then Borgify it. So, in all the fighting. I think the Borg would adapt some Romulan, Dominion, and Klingon technology.

They would be unbeatable almost. It’s scary what a Sphere can do with singularity jumps and cloak.

They should be unstoppable on STO especially the Unimatrix. It should be to beat the Borg you have to be out smart them not DPS them.

The Anthony Montgomery interview was insulting. TEKIES? Since when am I a tekie? He was only there to promote his pet project., one question he didn’t even answer. Robert Picardo did a great interview, talk to him more.

    • Elijah on 2014-05-08

I think he kept accidentally saying, “techies” because because before the interview, I was explaining that a majority of users are tech-savvy and I used the word “techies” to describe some of you. I think it got stuck in his head, so he subconsciously kept saying “techies” instead of “Trekkies.” — I brain-ninja’d him.

      • Adam LaJuene on 2014-05-08

Techie, Trekkie, either way, great interview.

Regarding organic technology in Babylon 5, the Minbari did not have it the Whitestars employed Vorlon organic technology. As far as I know (and I should know as I have seen the entire series and read some of the books) organic technology was developed by the Ikarrans (who were exterminated by it), Vorlons, Shadows and, the other First Ones. If you need further Babylon 5 information send an email to the address I provided, it would be an honour.

I was very happy to see you get into the ethics of STO with your conversation about whether or not the Undine are evil. But I think Elijah should have stuck to his guns, because he was pretty clearly right.
Al Rivera’s contention that the Undine are not evil but just misled and misinformed whitewashes things quite a bit. If being misled and misinformed exempts us from being evil, we’d be off the hook for all kinds of things – racism (I was just raised that way), sexism (how was I supposed to know women had intellects?), the Third Reich (but all my teachers, mentors, and leaders agreed that the Jews were evil!), and frankly most of the evils of the world.
The fact that the Undine were misinformed perhaps explains why they are so evil, but does not provide any evidence that they are not, in fact, evil. When I hear of a race who wants to exterminate entire other races because those others are different, weaker, have a different value system, or just see things differently, I see a race that fits the best possible definition of evil we have.
Perhaps everyone could agree that the Undine are not necessarily evil, I mean, had things worked out differently they wouldn’t be doing so many evil things. But they are clearly doing many evil things, and it’s just convenient shorthand to call a race of beings consistently committing evil acts “evil.”
Of course, I welcome arguments from the other side. I’m a philosopher, after all.

    • Elijah on 2014-05-08

Hey now! I stuck to my guns! I did not yield and say — “OOookay, you’re right!” — We agreed to disagree. 😀

True. I guess instead of “stuck to his guns,” I actually meant “wiped the floor with Al Rivera.”

Personally I loved season 9’s content through and through. From the epic STF’s, to the nanosuit(Crysis)-looking armor in the reputation… my only wondering thought, is if they do what they did in season 8… that being a side mission that lets you reach out to the same/similar group of undine that were sympathetic with the crew of Voyager, some that are willing to listen and thanks to the player presenting evidence; get wise to the situation they are in, that is… {SPOILERS for non season 9 and borg advance completionist’s}being played for fools by the iconians. A few would be even willing to put aside their xenophobia and join your cause to stop them.

Fingers crossed, and as always… great show.

PS. A Gorn, Klingon and a Undine enter a Casino, House always looses.(terrible joke I know.)

YAY! STAR TREK, BSG, AND BABYLON 5 ALL IN ONE EP! you just made this players day.

I am glad you got Al “someguy” back. As a player WHO as put thousands of dollars in the game i am glad. I understand people when they say it takes them out of game but i always like them and create a bio backstory about why they got set gear.

Also these lock boxes are important for the continuation of the game. Have you seen the Dil store and the exchange? Dil store rate is getting higher! Even after several weeks. Keys have doubled in prices and the ship (when being rarely being sold) is 200mill. If the other locked boxes bought us the romulan’s what do you this one will give? how many years will this keep the game going.

I know some people disagree but there is a group NOT being voiced here. We love trek as much or even more and are happy to through money at it. ALOT OF MONEY (much to my wife’s despair).

A BIG thank you guys for some great interviews with some great actors and passionate people about trek. Live long and play header.

Coming from the lore camp against the Undine ships I’d actually like to thank Al for the spun lore on where the Undine ships came from.

I’ve never had an issue with the lockbox itself… I was always just iffy on the “Hey! I’m a Ferengi and I’ve got these suicidal xenophobe’s ships to sell you!”

Now with the clarification It’s much easier in my mind to be “okay” with people having the ships themselves.

That out of the way I could tell in this interview that Rivera was really trying to hold back… He was so eager to really explain the full Undine motivation near the end of the interview, but he had to hold back so much because of Expansion 2 and Season 10.

I am truly annoyed with Priority One about Star Trek Online. I listened to the Podcast and there should be no full apology to Al Rivera. Here are my problems with the podcast.

    1) The Undine lock-box and reputation system, focuses on the Undine a little. I feel some players would not have a half dozen of load outs for each faction for each ship for each offensive/defensive strategy. So, Al Rivera is over estimating the usage.

    2) The Undine reputation system gives great gimmicks but at the same time. Who wants to build up the reputation system with the reputation system cap of 4/4/4. The current reputation systems other then the Undine(Counter-Command) or whatever the hell you want to call it, give great baseline tactical advantage to any of the factions. So a player going go for focused sets?

    3) The whole reputation system change. Cryptic mentioned they wont make end-level content for players so that’s why they capped the reputation system. Really. I think that is lazy programming and Cryptic in capacity to make end-level content.

    4) Al Rivera don’t understand why players would not playable Undine ships. Does Al Rivera live in a fantasy world. Since STO is the closest to cannon or suppose to be, how does Al Rivera misses that picture. Keep Star Trek Online believable. Now for the federation, Are they in the process of growing animals or whatever the heck of them for warfare.

    Example
Would someone raise a dog or cat to strap on a grenade launchers and phasers and still call it acceptable?

    5) The Federation Dyson ship is ultra non-Federation looking. How about fixing more faction specific ships interior?

    6) I thought Star Trek had some exploration. I don’t see it anymore in STO but a total gun fest.

    7) Fresh 50 level players to long time running level 50 players with all full reputations. No fresh 50 player should match a 2-3 year old fully rep level 50 player. So, Cryptic solution is Nerf veteran players. Really?

Overall, I think Cryptic is lacking in a grand scale of thing and Al Rivera is the mascot cheerleader supporting it. I really don’t feel Al Rivera is listening to players and only selecting certain things he can be hyper sensitive to. I really think Priority One should get a stronger stance and tell Al Rivera if something does not fly.

    • Elijah on 2014-05-05

Woaw, Woaw, Woaw now… he came on and schooled me because I really did misrepresent the lockbox as hyper-focused against the Undine — and I was wrong. The points you made weren’t a part of the discussion we had. Also, once he said that the load-out system was being worked on for the ground that solves a lot of the issues of enemy-buffed/hyperfocused equipment.

A lot of your points we didn’t really touch on. The core of the discussion was to bring clarity to lockbox items and ships. More importantly, we really made the point to express the important of story and lore — particularly with LockBox ships.

      • Vivienne Anthony on 2014-05-05

You are right. I am simply tired of hearing Al Rivera and any of the developer addressing only what they want to address. I would like Priority One to ask the hard questions that might not be the question wants to hear Al Rivera/Cryptic. So, far I listened to three priority one podcast.

I don’t use load-outs or switch character/ground/space or active traits. There seem to be no need too. So, Al Rivera comments about the ground load-outs is irrelevant to me since I don’t do much ground(very rarely).

        • The_Grand_Nagus on 2014-05-06

The simple fact is, if they ask questions that make the devs uncomfortable, then they wont come on the show at all. So either accept how it has to be, or dont listen to dev episodes.

          • Vivienne Anthony on 2014-05-07

            Your comment is awaiting moderation.

I would have better respect for Priority One if they did. It does not have to be a full force attack at STO/PWE/Crpytic but I think it will be fairer. I honestly heard more then three podcast.. Frankly, some of my thoughts have been talked about or skipped.

It seems to be ask the community a question but then don’t ask Al Rivera/Cryptic/STO the very question the community was asked about.

So we get a kit system. I find it actually intersting and cool but the only way to get modules (shiny purple ones) is to grind the Assimiliation mission. Worst yet, no tutorial. This would be a perfect case for a tutorial holodeck mission and youtube community supported video. I miss Stoke.. Thirdly, I would not work up the reputation system to get a module. I setup all my ground buffs and weapons for a certain damage type not focused faction specific. Defera would have been a great place to get modules.

Oh. Don’t give me started with the reputation system change. It’s like they want to give the veteran the shaft in not so nice places.

I am glad J.J. left for Star Wars, I for 1 am not really interested in any more J.J. verse. Star wars can have him. As far as anything “new” for Star Trek that is exactly what I want to see “NEW”, even “FUTURISTIC”.(Star Trek is becoming very dated microtech wise) I would LOVE to see a new crew dealing with the shenanigans of the vorgans and or sphere builders /temporal warfare. Set in the future ,100 years even like TNG picked up from TOS. Maybe a time ship crew!? I dont have any negative feelings about anything Cryptic give us,(I.E.Season9) I love this game and will play it till it dies, or I die. LOL A huge Thanx to the team at Cryptic for everything they have made. The writing in particular is spectacular how they have, and keep weaving this story from all of the shows even tiny little references. THANK YOU ALL! And SHAME on all the negative nay sayers the game is free isn’t that good enough?

  23. The_Grand_Nagus on 2014-05-05

I think JJ-Wars is going to be pretty amazing, for 2 reasons:

    1) The story is not a re-telling of existing movies/characters(which many fans automatically hate), it is actually a continuation of the existing movies. Because of this, it doesnt have to bare the burden that remakes like NuTrek have to.

2)JJ will make it fun again. One of the biggest things that made the prequels feel different from the original movies(other than how clean everything was) was that the characters were so formal and bland. Regardless of whether you liked the actual storyline or not, the JJ-Trek movies were fun and had charming characters.

I think both of these points combined will be a winning combo for JJ, the Star Wars franchise, and the fans.

  24. Adam LaJuene on 2014-05-05

The Undine space Battlezone is quite fun, especially since difficulty scales with the number of players. I spent some time securing and holding a point solo, taking out Undine ships as they approached. I also LOVE the Fluidic Antiproton Dual Heavy Cannons, the weapons fire is amazing as is the proc.

    Keep up the great work.

        • The_Grand_Nagus on 2019-01-30

The simple fact is, if they ask questions that make the devs uncomfortable, then they wont come on the show at all. So either accept how it has to be, or dont listen to dev episodes.

And SHAME on all the negative nay sayers the game is free isn’t that good enough?

i’m likeing season 9 though i wish it had a undine ground battlezone for all the ground weapons i have lol but it’s good and i love the feature episode. Now as for Star Wars and J.J dispite what u all think he can not do a thing WITHOUT not the say so from disney but the go ahead from lucas cause from what i’ve heard he still has to OK it but then again since the expanded universe is nolonger canon meaning no mara jade or boba fett i won’t be seeing the new films lol.

JJ Trek was good but trek is CBS and Paramount. Star Wars is just Disney so we can see more from one company then 2. For the new PVE anyone notice that Elite has gotten harder?

The Undine space Battlezone is quite fun, especially since difficulty scales with the number of players. I spent some time securing and holding a point solo, taking out Undine ships as they approached. I also LOVE the Fluidic Antiproton Dual Heavy Cannons, the weapons fire is amazing as is the proc.

    Keep up the great work.

Seems like Capt. G is a regular now. I wonder if its possible to implement threat into PvP. Where others ships ,but you, in radius of a tanks threat get a considerable damage resistances buff or attacking ships get a damage rebuff against other ships ,but you, encouraging attacking ships to take out you the tank before hand.

Maybe rework extend shields to work similar to this mechanic.

In the episode it was speculated that an animated series for TNG might be a good way to continue the Star Trek Prime Universe. I do and don’t agree. I think TNG’s ship has sailed and it’s story has been told. On the other hand using Nemesis as a jumping off point an animated serious following the exploits of Captain William Riker and the USS Titan would probably be enormously fun.

My first thought is Al Rivera does not realize players build up the reputation system to build up a player passive skills. If he does realize this, he is ignoring it.

So his comment about the reputation system makes me not want to do it because there is no increase overall benefit. Since there is a Cap there is no need to even do it.

So, Why would someone changed something that is good for alll factions to someone that partially good for all faction and a little hyperfocused?

Thank you Cryptic and Al Rivera.

  38. bareel on 2014-05-05

I think my comment was referenced at an hour twenty in roughly.

What I meant was that the ship themselves gained conciseness and defected to your captain. As choice and what is sentience have always been core concepts in Star Trek.

PS It is pronounced Bay-Rel but good try, much better than most.
