Elijah may have fallen victim to a nano-probe infection; but, Tony and James take the lead and bring you the latest from Star Trek Online. First, the guys Trek Out what would really happen if a black-hole formed in the center of a planet with Priority One’s Science Advisor, Dr. Robert Hurt. In STO News we review new ship materials in  Season 8 Dev Blog #49, another attempt from PWE to incentivise ARC testing, the latest Patch Notes to hit Holodeck, and an article from GamaSutra about Fighting Familiarity in games. Later, we open Hailing Frequencies and see what’s incoming from YOU — our listeners.

This Week’s Community Questions

  • Have these incentives enticed you to download ARC?
  • How do you want to be surprised and kept on your toes in Star Trek Online? For instance, if explorations missions are to be developed further, how would you like to experience them? What unanticipated variables could be added to something like an STF?

Whether recruiting, managing the global team of talented volunteers, arranging interviews with special guests, editing, web-development, finding sponsors, managing crowd funding, or writing content for the podcast, Elio has a hand in it all. A long-time Trekkie, Elio has been watching the series since he was a child and sneaking in late night, back-to-back, episodes of TNG reruns. He finally embraced the Trekdom in college and spent many hours catching up on the entire multiverse…. instead of studying.

I have Arc installed on my main PC, but it has been set not to start with my computer and the only time it is used is when there are freebies being given away!

Regarding STFs; I think that they should add a harder level above elite that has the STF missions the way they used to before they got split up for those of us that can complete the elites with optionals with ease.

I also think that all STFs should be changed so that they can be failed – make them all the same!

We also need the STFs updating so that we can choose between Omega marks and Fleet marks as the reward like we have with the newer PvE queued missions.

Great Show. Really want to change one of my toons names to DR. Hurt.

CQ: 1. Same as most when it comes to ARC. Downloaded separately from the regular launcher.

CaptSmirk asked people what they wanted to see on tweeter. I replied The TR-116 rifle, the Khaaaannnnnnnnn! or blood wine remotes. More locked box stuff and more Lobi.

As for STF’s i found ISE ok back in the day but now I love CSE. 399 times out of 400 you get great times on the STF’s channels. and its just fun. I find the STFS the best part of the game and would leave them how they are but would like to see the other reps (Tholians) meet the stfs at the same leave.

PS. I said i had 90 which is 90,000 bonus not 9,000. 🙂 But i still love you guys anyway!

PSS. thanks for a great show again.

    Still not enticed by ARC.

I would defiantly like to see surprises in the exploration missions. I miss the episodes in the original series, TNG, DS9 and Voyager in which the crew discovered something new, A new lifeform that may or may not have hostile intent, anomalies that threaten the ship and her crew; or even ones where you detect a race using a dangerous substance (I.e OMEGA particles) and must deal with them accordingly.

Excellent show, always wonderful to hear from Dr. Hurt.
QC1:Already have it, dont use it except to get free stuff.

ARC: I have it installed, but dont use it. I still launch the game using the application, so the ARC program never actually runs on my computer. If they offer some reward I actually want, I’ll log in through ARC that one time to get it, but never again.

Surprises: It is easy to surprise a new player who is playing something for the first time, but if you have played a game for 4 years it is not very realistic to expect to be surprised by anything other than brand new content. Regardless of what they do to exploration, a year later(or probably much sooner) we will have experienced all of the possible scenarios and wont be surprised anymore.

The best hope STO has of offering people surprises on a regular basis is the Foundry, because in theory it offers an unlimited amount of new content. However it will never actually realize its potential unless Cryptic devotes the necessary resources into A) fixing the bugs, B) expanding its features, C) doing the necessary PR to make the playerbase as a whole aware of its existence and D) offering rewards people want enough to actually play the missions.

1.Already had ARC downloaded separately from the regular launcher. Got the freebies, then opened STO with the regular launcher.

2.Surprising exploration missions would be awesome. To just fly along and be given an assignment would be a nice change of pace.
