Subscription Box1Greetings, Captains! You’re listening to Episode 153 of Priority One Podcast, the premier Star Trek Online podcast! This episode was recorded live on TrekRadio.net on Thursday, December 12th, 2013 and published for download on Monday, December 16th at PriorityOnePodcast.com!

James decided to wear a red shirt over the weekend which has landed him in a spot of death, so Tony and Elijah are manning the bridge of the USS Priority One as we set a course and engage at Warp 9 for another show packed to bursting point with STO goodness. In Trek It Out we look at a new Star Trek game hitting an iOS device near you! In a rather light STO News, Klingons deliver their answer to the Federation Avenger Class with their very own Mogh Battle Cruiser, and we discuss the latest Spire Featured Project. Next, we discuss a topic that’s dear to many of our hearts — the decline of player interdependence in MMORPGs and ask for what your thoughts on this topic are, before we move into the highlight of this week’s episode — Star Trek Online’s Lead Writer Christine Kestrel Thompson joins us to talk Season 8 and what it’s like to write for the only living incarnation of our beloved franchise!  And of course as always, we’ll open hailing frequencies and see what’s incoming from you, our lovely listeners.

I’ve played a fair amount of MMOs starting with a brief stint with Anarchy Online (remember that game!), a much longer stint with the seminal WoW, then SWTOR, DDO, and the Secret World. I was very excited when STO came out but RL got in the way and I didn’t get to play it right out the gate. I started playing on and off not long before Free to Play and I’ve stayed with it since. I’ve loved Star Trek since I was a kid and have fond memories of watching various incarnations of Trek with with my dad and grandpa. Needless to say I’m hooked and a lifetime subscriber to STO now 😛

I like the creative freedom that STO allows you with ship builds and the fact that your captain class choice doesn’t completely pigeonhole your playstyle on one character. I like that there’s one server/shard, it makes it easier to connect with friends. I was always of the feeling that coordinating what server you play on with your buddies turned into being a pain in the ass and someone invariably gets left out.

Keep up the good work folks!

i started back with everquest. a strong class balance made it essential to group for the most part. the buffing system was far better as well. sto are short and burst like, in eq there were long duration buffs. they required lot of mana and time for the caster to invest in getting it, so they go to gathering zones and offer them for a cost

I take back my previous comment on the Voth storyline, I went back to your 150th episode and found out it’s all within the tier reputation system.

I certainly see the MMORPG.com blog as being a good question.

I play STO just because of a strong community that Star Trek has, meeting great people that hopefully meet some time in the future, including meeting you guys. But I have seen the social side of STO disappear allot and replaced with the grind or sink hole.

I feel just how Cryptic has been approaching new content and hearing allot of the time, especially from Capt Gecko on various podcasts, is an attitude of a ‘business plan’ or ‘making money’. They seem to take that on more than having a community feel or being social. Personally I hate it when Geko talks like that.

Sure, they like to keep PWE and their share holders happy, and get paid, but should it be destroying or delaying the social experience of STO, like crafting?

Have a good Christmas guys and looking forward to hearing Priority One in 2014.

    Hi guys,

Great episode! I just wanted to say that STO is my first and only MMO. I play it mainly for the Star Trek elements-although the gameplay is fun too. I wouldn’t be a fan of multiple servers-it is a little bit too complex for me, and I’d prefer to play will any and all friends who join. However, I do like the idea of working with other people when crafting items. Can’t wait for the next episode!

    Another great episode!

I’ve played quite a few MMOs over the years; primarily World of Warcraft for the longest time, except for briefly dipping into EverQuest for a few days before that. I’ve tried everything from FFXI, Rift, and EVE to SWTOR, Guild Wars 2, and FFXIV:ARR. Might as well toss LOTRO and DDO into the mix as well.

The thing is always keep coming back to STO. I’ve got a lifetime sub, and though I might drift from time to time, mostly to mess around in FFXIV these days, I always.. ALWAYS.. come back to STO.

The ship visuals are just gorgeous, and though I’m a fan of a wide variety of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Star Trek was the gateway drug given to me by my Mom that got the whole thing started. It, and it’s games, will always have a special place in my heart. She, and Trek, taught me that it’s okay to be a geek when I was a kid.

That really should read “The thing is I always keep coming back to STO.” Proofread fail.

STO is my first and currently only MMO. I’ve tried others briefly, but nothing has lasted more than a couple of hours. I’m primarily attracted to it because it is Star Trek and I think that this format is the best for a Trek game. I don’t know about the server search, but I would like to have a reliance on other captains. This is basically the game I wanted as a kid.

    I enjoy the podcasts.

You brought up Ultima Online in the show, that was my first MMO I played. I played WOW and Lord of the Rings online and servers are good but in STO you see the big fleets like 500 members because of one server. Is this a good or bad thing? I am KDF and got the Mogh, love the ship. I will use it for multiple toons because of what the ship can do.

  16. seannewboy on 2013-12-16

    Awesome episode guys, loved it.

As for the community question, i have been playing MMO’s since Earth and Beyond by Westwood, and have played about half a dozen. I love STO because the devs and playerbase are the best.

Ok guys, you sounded unsure about the crits and crit chances. So I checked. Took me sometime to find all the info and numbers but it seems that part is UNTOUCHED from the nerf. Joy!

As for the rest of the show love the idea of “All of this has happened before” and it works as a nice touchstone to the star trek we know and love.

  18. wjshoot123 on 2013-12-16

The only real MMO I play is Star Trek Online. It was the first ever MMO I download and I was hooked. Plus also I am a trek fan. And also STO keeps on grow and changing with new content.
