150-1Greetings, Captains! You’re listening to Episode 150 of Priority One Podcast (that’s right, 150!)- the premier Star Trek Online podcast! This episode was recorded live on TrekRadio.net on Thursday, November 14th, 2013 and published for download on Monday, November 18th at PriorityOnePodcast.com!

That’s right, Captains, 150 episodes, the big one-five-oh, and we couldn’t have done it without your support! Unfortunately James got a little too into the celebratory mood with the Cardassian Canar, and so Tony and Elijah take the helm whilst wearing party hats!

We celebrate this milestone episode with plenty of special guests & plenty of content! This week we Trek Out the science behind a Dyson Sphere when NASA Jet Propulsion Lab’s scientist, Dr. Robert Hurt joins us again on Priority One Podcast. In STO News, Season 8 has finally hit Holodeck, and we’ll be giving you our first-impressions of the new content. Several Dev Blogs have been published as well (19, 20, 21 and 22) – so we’ll be highlighting those for you too! Later, we’re joined by Star Trek Online’s Community Manager, Brandon “Branflakes” Feltzer to share his insights on community feedback for Season 8, and of course as always, we’ll open hailing frequencies and see what’s incoming from you, our lovely listeners.

Topics Discussed

This Week’s Community Questions

  • What is your idea for a feature that Perfect World could build into ARC that might make it a more acceptable – or even useful – addition to your gaming experience?
  • What are your thoughts on the new Federation tutorial? Do you think it remedies the barrier to entry for incoming players? Does it do a good job of teaching game-mechanics whilst immersing you in the Star Trek mythos?
  • Captains, what do you think of the new Voth Bastion Cruiser? Is this a ship you want to fly? Is it more attractive than the other available Flight-Deck ships in-game?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

The best way I can describe the way I feel about ARC is to paraphase Edwin Starr’s “War”

    ARC, huh, yeah
    What is it good for
    Absolutely nothing

    Say it again, y’all

    ARC, huh, good God
    What is it good for
    Absolutely nothing

Hi guys, and congrats on your 150th episode! A quick reply to something Al Rivera said in his last interview with you guys. We all know CBS said “no T5 connie”. I get it. But why did he immediately shut down the T5 Excalibur question? Those are obviously not the same ship, and the devs could easily make a fleet version that doesnt include a connie skin. Do you guys have any idea if this is just something he personally doesnt want and isnt going to allow to happen?

I know the first part of what Ive written isn’t for the questions you wanted us to answer but i thought id just throw them out there and maybe you’ll ask about them on the next podcast if you have an interview from someone in PWE or cryptic 🙂

My thoughts on the Dyson Sphere content:

First off they’ve done an awesome job with it its so much better than the previous content like the basic STF queue and reputation system they’ve really fleshed it out more for this content and i hope they in the future may flesh it out a bit more like the Dyson Sphere content and genuinely make it more fun and enjoyable.

I personally love the ground battle zone area which really makes me want to play way to much(which is always good). I know many people are not fond of Dino’s being in the game but for me it makes sense that the voth could bio engineer a Dino to use as a weapon for them considering they are essentially “evolved” Dino’s to begin with 🙂

The amount of dilithium you can get late game now makes things a lot less frustrating especially with the daily’s and the ground events that are going on, so that said they should increase the dilithium refining cap because it will start to frustrate people as it has done for me and many that ive talked to via zone chat on the Dyson sphere. Simply because now we end up with more dilithium that we can refine way to quickly and the time waiting for it is annoying accompanied with the size of the higher tier requirements of the reputation system.

The Breach queue is immense and really feels like a realistic attack on a enormous base which especially with the fact it literally is the breach! 😀 (you’ll understand if you play it).

My Thoughts on the new Fed Tutorial:

IT WAS AWESOME, they really did hit the nail on the head with this tutorial, so much nostalgia was going through my head as i was playing and it really made it feel like you were part of the action, previous content felt …I guess disconnected? you really feel like you’re apart of the game now rather than just on the sidelines its awesome. I hope they continue to do more content like this + so they don’t make the tutorial characters irrelevant they should do more voice acting (with those tutorial characters) and make it feel like they ares till part of your journey as they are your bridge officers 🙂

    1. Arc… Let me put it this way, my information is private for a reason. I play Star Trek under a pseudonymn, for privacy. I don’t want a program or a console that records what I do. This is the same reason the Xbox One will never grace my home, not cause of what it DOES do, but what it could be used to do.

Want to make it worth my while, if you collect my information I expect a higher stipend every month. My personal info (user habits, websites etc) would sell for 49.99 – 300.00 depending on the vendor, so I expect 150.00 to my account each month if I opt in for Arc.

If we are made to use arc, I am afraid my four 50s, and my ton of alts will have to go unplayed, they’re stories ending prematurely because of a company policy… again, having gone though the City of Heroes cancellation, I know I would never touch another PWE game again, just as I now won’t go near NC Soft.

Arc? Already being forced to use it. (Pre STO, I’ve always refused to play a game that required a separate loader (ie:steam). There is NO trade off for giving up privacy. (Everything “they” know, can, and WILL be used against you).
Perhaps CBS should seriously consider letting that license expire. They’re, (pwe) is already hurting the Star Trek legacy enough.
Oh, btw, “Some” of us haven’t played sphere since launch. Not too many bugs?

    1. Not a fan at all of ARC. I fear lag and bloat, invasive computer intrusion, and a general Big Brother feeling. At the very least, I’d like some kind of assurance that the funds gathered from STO using the ARC launcher will go towards STO, and not fund other MMOs that aren’t succeeding as well, or new projects not related to STO, etc. Also, we should always have a full opt-out option. For opt-in, I think compensation in the form of Dil/Zen might be in order, if PWE is benefitting from my info. (eg, on the order of 1 zen per hour logged on and opted-in.) And I feel opt-out should be a firewall-level of non-intrusiveness – no polling, no ads, etc.) Certainly no polling of programs installed whatsoever – performance polling in-game is reasonable, but my privacy is paramount.

    2. Haven’t played the tutorial yet (6 alts are keeping me busy) Sounds like a big success, though.

    3. Voth ship: pretty, better looking than many of the ships, imo. Functionality? I don’t know enough to be strong about this, but it looks good… I’ll be looking for others to review, since I try to play ‘cheap’.

Great 150’th show guys especially the end… that song from Jurassic park always warms my Gorn heart. Referring to the ARC I’m not sure there is much they can do to entice me. I have every game on my pc via Steam… Unless they make the transport simple to do… I’ll keep using the Steam train. Here’s to 300. Salute!

Great episode as always. Your new audio engineer does an AMAZING job. I just wanted to respond to the question about ARC and say that there’s absolutely nothing they could do to make this worthwhile for me. It seems like it’s a bloatware resource hog. When it comes to ARC.. DO. NOT. WANT.

    150 GUYS! THATS GREAT!

The science lesson was very cool! FOR SCIENCE!

As for what would make it worth my time with Arc. Not sure. I like the way stuff is right now AND going to another system would be a pain. I like to avoid pain.

I wouldn’t mind seeing more veteran BO’s, like SEASON 5 change over or the Romulan’s D’rex. but if you dismiss him (like i did) BEFORE LOOKING AT HIM CAN BE A PAINFUL EXPERIENCE. But i don’t think that this would be a good reward for the change over as d’rex can be given to everyone.
