Welcome to the Spirit of Trek, a weekly column where we identify and celebrate Gene Roddenberry’s vision by discovering how its messages have started to permeate throughout humanity’s collective consciousness by looking for it on the Internet and within popular culture. With the holiday season quickly approaching, keep the Spirit of Trek alive by giving the gift of Trek to your friends and family. This week we’ll be looking at several new and not so new gift ideas for the holidays.

Star Trek licensing and merchandising has been busy this year with the release of several new and exciting products from ThinkGeek, Her Universe, StarTrek.com, Roddenberry.com, Anovos and many others.

We’ll kick things off with the most obvious gift of all for every Star Trek fan, the shows and films on DVD and Blu-Ray. Whether you’re looking to complete your collection, or upgrade to Blu-Ray, there are many choices available. All three seasons of the Original Series are available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Last year, TNG’s Season One was remastered for Blu-Ray and on December 4th [amazon_link id=”B0095XPZBC” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Season Two[/amazon_link] will be released. The remaining seasons of The Next Generation, The Animated Series, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise are available on DVD as standalone seasons, or as complete series.

Then, there are the films. All of the Star Trek films are also available on DVD and on Blu-Ray. However, did you know that there are film collections as well? That’s right, if you’re a fan of the Original Series or TNG, you have your choice of movie collections featuring all of the films from either generation. But, if you can’t decide, there’s also the [amazon_link id=”B002KKCXTE” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]complete film box set[/amazon_link] as well. Whatever your preference, Star Trek DVDs or Blu-Rays are a great gift for Star Trek fans, young and old alike.

If you’re looking for the perfect gift for kids of all ages, there are a number of cool toys and games available this holiday season. Starship models, ornaments, a plush light up Enterprise, fluffy interactive tribbles, TOS and TNG Pez dispensers, an inflatable Captain’s chair, action figures, Star Trek rockets, or Roddenberry’s Rod and Barry Plush Dolls are some of the toys available. But, if the Star Trek fan in your life is into card and board games, there are [amazon_link id=”B001SN8G8G” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Star Trek[/amazon_link] and [amazon_link id=”B005P36PVU” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Klingon[/amazon_link] Monopoly games, the Red Shirt Card game, and the Star Trek Deck Building Game: The Next Generation are also available this holiday season. If there are any Klingons on your Star Trek holiday shopping list, you can stuff their stockings with honor and a Bat’leth Letter Opener or the Hayes manual for the Klingon Bird-of-Prey.

Let your fandom show through with Star Trek insignia pins, jewelry, cuff links, neck ties, a wide range of t-shirts for men, women, and toddlers, socks, dresses, men’s and women’s cycling jerseys, Ladies Tees and hoodies, towels, bathrobes, and even a pair of tribble slippers can help you look your best this holiday season. Just don’t forget the festive Spock Holiday Hat complete with ears.

If you’re like most people that enjoy dressing up and donning a new uniform for the holiday season, Anovos and Roddenberry has a wide range of high quality tunics and uniforms to choose from and a complete selection of the accessories that will make your outfit just that much better. What uniform isn’t complete without a tricorder, phaser, medical scanner, and/or combadge. Make sure you’re looking your best for when your holiday guests arrive.

As you’re waiting for them to arrive, you can listen to Star Trek: The Original Series Soundtrack Collection to help put you in the mood for the festivities. Check the time on your Star Trek wrist watch, and finish decking the halls with an authentic Horga’hn, Star Trek framed photos and art work, retro posters, plaques, [amazon_link id=”B007RELZPQ” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Star Trek night lights[/amazon_link], and even a luminglass that will give your place that nice warm Borg feel. When your guests arrive, they can announce their arrival with your Star Trek Electronic Door Chime as well.

Give your guests something to peruse while they wait for the holiday meal, with any number of the Star Trek novels, and books. However, the Star Trek coffee table books, [amazon_link id=”1612184170″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years[/amazon_link] and Star Trek: The Next Generation 365 will keep them entertained and well informed as they wait to dig in to the scrumptious meal you’ve prepared.

To help prepare your Star Trek themed holiday feast, an enterprise pizza cutter, Spock oven mitt, enterprise bottle openers, Starfleet Academy Sporks, glass set, and the Enterprise and shuttle [amazon_link id=”B004NQYLFW” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]salt and pepper shakers[/amazon_link] can make your holiday memories live long and prosper. Then, when Santa Q makes his appearance, you can have cookies made with Star Trek cookie cutters straight from your Spock cookie jar, and a mug of “Tea, Earl Grey, Hot” in either a Klingon or Enterprise Mug, a six pack of Romulan Ale, or a Starfleet Hip flask filled with your favorite brand of synthohol waiting for him.

There are a lot of Star Trek goodies to be thankful for this year. Everything from toys and games, clothing and accessories, books, household gifts, and more are available. So, when  you are filling out your holiday shopping list, considering giving the gift of Trek to your friends and family and keep the Spirit of Trek alive and well throughout the year.

The time has come to wrap up this week’s column. Thank you for joining me on this journey to discover how the Spirit of Trek has started to permeate throughout our culture with the hope that one day, Gene Roddenberry’s vision for humanity’s future will become a reality. If you come across something that you believe embodies the Spirit of Trek on the Internet or within popular culture, please do not hesitate to share it with me. I may discuss it in a future article. Live long and prosper.
