Subspace Communique #1

Hello all! My name is Wes and I’m happy to be joining the Priority One community as a new blog writer for the site!

First off, I’ll give you a little background on my Trek fandom! I was born into the franchise, and some of my earliest memories are of watching the TOS movies on VHS, and boy did I ever wear those tapes out! My full name is John Wesley Garis, but I go by my middle name. My dad thinks I was named after various historical figures, as that was the only way my mom could talk him into calling me Wes. Unbeknownst to him, she was keen on the name because of the infamous and so widely-reviled Wesley Crusher. But deeper than that, she liked the name because Gene Roddenberry’s middle name was actually Wesley. It was only recently that she confirmed I am partially named after Gene, and it is now a point of pride for me. I was born in 1992, and my mother tells me that I would watch TNG with her as a toddler, and that the theme music would nearly always cause my crying to cease! It was simply awesome growing up in a sci-fi/Trek family. Long story short: I love Trek, am well-versed in its lore, and have a lasting passion for the franchise.

I’ve been playing Star Trek Online (on and off) since its very early, shaky days shortly after release. I stopped briefly when it was still subscription-based, but once it went free-to-play, I came back to pick up where I left off. Since then, it’s been my constant MMO of choice, mostly because I love the franchise so much, but also because Cryptic has done such a fantastic job updating and refining the game. As for my gameplay choices: my main character is a Federation Science Officer named Edwin (captain of a Fleet Excelsior) and my alt is a Romulan Tactical Officer named Kalvok (commander of a Fleet Mogai). In terms of endgame content, I am pretty much exclusively a PvE/STF player (with a little dabbling in shuttle PvP!), but I also enjoy the occasional break from the pew-pew scene to do some roleplaying.

My column, Subspace Communiqué, will likely cover a mixture of various topics, including endgame content walkthroughs, discussions about the Star Trek franchise as a whole, and my own thoughts about STO from the point of view of a lifelong gamer and MMO player. I sincerely hope you will enjoy reading my column as much as I will like writing it!

I look forward to being a part of Priority One’s wonderful community and meeting all of you! Feel free to message me in-game through either of the above characters @TribbleChow.

Until next time, fly safe and live long and prosper!
