This week, we’re Trekking Out some big names who might have been cast as Commander Sisko, but weren’t; TV Guide brings us a closer look at the sets of Discovery; we get a sneak preview of the new Star Trek theme song; AND of course there’s controversy over press coverage of the Discovery premiere.

In Star Trek Online News, we’ve got details on a new ship bundle in the C-Store, more about that new fleet holding coming with Season 14 – Emergence – and we’re taking a spoiler-free look at the latest featured episode “Beyond the Nexus,” which brings Geordi into STO.

Later, Jayce is here with another Trek Lit 101.

And as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages.

Don’t forget! Starting next week, with Episode 336, we will be switching our release date to Fridays! That way, we’ll be able to bring you more Discovery news, more Star Trek Online news, and just in time for the weekend! Keep an eye on our social media channels for more details.

I think they made almost the only sensible choice by embargoing reviews. Given the internet’s penchant for blowing negativity out of all proportion, reviews almost invariably hurt viewership these days. For myself, I don’t think I’d be swayed against watching at least the two-part pilot, regardless of reviews. But think of all the Trek newbie viewers who might never even give the show a chance if bad reviews start making rounds on Twitter or Facebook.

As for my thoughts on STO’s newest FE, here they are.
First, I agree it was super short. I could have done with a lot more story development than just “fight ship. beam in. fight bad guys. leave.” Most importantly, I think Geordi really deserved more. Don’t get me wrong, I adored LeVar’s voice work. He’s amazing and long overdue in STO. But there was no time to develop any attachment at all to any part of this story. With Survivor it was different, because we’ve spent years building Sela’s story.
Second, I admit I was irked at the mismatched uniforms. It’s petty, and I know it. But there it is.
Third… Strictly in terms of the idea of the mission, I loved it. It really had a TNG feeling to it. Maybe not so much the pew pew, but the mysterious alien antagonist and Geordi making magic in Engineering. And the gorgeous Galaxy interior really drove home a sense of familiarity to TNG.

P.S. Loved the show, as always! I’m happy for Kenna that she gets to catch TWoK after the nightmare of the hurricane.

Honestly, I never search out reviews of shows prior to watching them anyways, I’d rather get a sense for myself whether I like something before adding ‘professional opinionaters’ to the mix.

I don’t necessarily agree that review embargo is a good idea, but I can imagine that it *might* be less an evil attempt to kill bad press, and more a concern about potential screener leaks and/or hacking, which is much more prevalent nowadays. Discovery copies are probably one of the most highly-sought after items in the geek realm, and all it takes is for one malicious Trekster to get their hands on a copy and pre-release it to the world, wrecking a lot of buzz and maybe even causing some legal headaches between CBS and some of the distributors like Netflix.

Various thoughts on “Beyond the Nexus”
    – “ARE YOU GONNA BUY THE TNG INTERIOR?!?!” Basically the whole mission.
    – Poor Reg Barclay: he make ONE slightly ERP-y holoprogram once, and the whole of Starfleet (and their allies) never lets him live it down. 🙁
    – I’m amused that the Forrestal mobs don’t just have the standard TWOK uniforms AND phasers, but the Commander Engineer NPCs are wearing the Scotty vest. The one that costs 1.5 MILLION dilithium for players, but still.
    – It’s a short sales tour of the inside of the Enterprise-D, err, I mean ‘Starship Madison’, the same old shoot-and-click tasks read to you by an otherwise great sounding Levar Burton, even a stock Trek villain-of-the-week encounter, and that’s it. Take out the Nexus, the TNG interior, and Geordi LaForge, and the mission goes to exactly the same place. So what’s the point?
    – The Nexus is completely irrelevant in the mission. But then again, what exactly were folks expecting us silent player characters to do in the Nexus? Would we meet Echo Picard and have Christmas with his imaginary family? Ooh and ahh as Old Kirk performed riding tricks for us in the hills of Idaho? Watch Geordi go on a successful date with a girl? Not gonna happen.

So are we FINALLY gonna reach 2411? I’m ready for this in-game Groundhog Year to end; feels like I just keep shooting the same Borg in ISA over and over again. :p

TBH I never understood why time doesn’t just progress naturally in the game…Although I suppose it might make the replay value of some old missions a little odd…Or I guess for new players coming in. But I still think it should be like 2420 by now, right?

    Wonderful show everyone.

As to the embargo on Discovery, WatchMojo has a video about how to identify upcoming bad movies (Top 10 Signs That A Movie Is Going To Suck), its very depressing to relate to discovery. Im not saying that this proves anything, but several points do align. I am looking forward to the first episode.

What the heck is wrong with enterprise theme?

I enjoyed Levar in the episode, very well done.

Thanks for all of the Twok about talk.

I really think that people are either going to love or hate Disco. I’m sure there will be a lot of fans who will be disappointed…I mean, just think of how many episodes of Star Trek past we argue over? For instance, I love Sub Rosa (TNG series 7) but apparently it’s one of the worst 😀

I was excited for Beyond the Nexus and the return of Levar Burton as LaForge. I was happy to start the mission and to hear Levar’s voice. I had previously mentioned that I missed featured episodes that lacked a pop or wow factor. This episode, very much had the wow factor. When I beamed aboard the Madison and seen the Galaxy interior for the first time, my jaw hit the floor. My eyes water just thinking about it. I momentarily forgot the mission at hand and took in the interior and explored every inch of it. I want to give kudos to the character artist. LaForge was life like and there was no mistaken who he is. To date, I think of all the characters we have had over the years, he is the most recognizable. Oh and I will certainly be buying the Galaxy interior when it is released. This is one very happy camper and I love replaying this mission.

    • Kenna on 2017-09-21

I seriously agree with you about the interior…it was so well done, it made me very happy 🙂

Growing up I was always a fan of Levar thanks to Reading Rainbow. It’s hwat helped get me into Trek. So seeing him return as Geordi in the featured episode was brilliant. He picked up the role as if he left the set yesterday. The writing, on Cryptics part, showed that they knew how Levar played the role and the writing was brilliant. I always saw him as a hands on Captain and it’s protrayed well in the episode. The combat was a little light vs Brushfire where it was a bit over the top. But the Galaxy interiors are brilliant. Two Galaxies and an Ambassador.

By the way, I thought Ten Forward was only on the Enterprise not any other ship. Curious. Oh well. Solid Writing, Action and Story. Bring on Season 14!

    • Kenna on 2017-09-18

Ohhhhhh I never even thought about Ten Forward like that. I assumed it would be all ships since surely it’s just the name of the room? I knew we were going there as soon as they said “meet me at these coordinates on Deck 10”. But if it was, like, the name of the bar…I can totally see how it would only be on the Enterprise!
