This week we’re Trekking Out what’s wrong with the new Star Trek Beyond posters, and we’re also looking at the newest addition to the new TV series writing team. In Star Trek Online, Kenna’s looking at the dynamics of minority playerbases in STO, and Mark takes us through the latest mission that’s been announced for Agents of Yesterday. Later, Jayce is back with another Trek Lit 101.

As usual, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages.

TOPICS DISCUSSED

This week’s Community Questions:

  • Is there a risk that being too pure to the “prime” universe — or the TV Trek we know and love — could damage the series’s success on mass-market television?
  • Do you think that Star Trek Online is a collection of minority playerbases? And what do you think Cryptic could do to foster more diversity in game?

Wonderful show, loved the outtakes. *wonders what Janeway gets up to in Star Trek Voyeur*

cq1) I would love to see the new show flesh out what happened in the other shows. Create backstories, show histories, etc.
cq2) Society in general is always a collection of minorities, so yes. I think it is doing a decent job, not sure how they could improve it.

Hello Everybody! Another great episode; thank you!
Q1: I think that you’ll be able to do a great TV show in the prime universe and still be able to capture today’s audience. Most of Alex Kurtzman’s shows do quite well on TV, so he has shown he understands today’s audiences. I also think that moving back to a earlier time period when the Federation was not quite so civilized will provide more opportunities for action scenes, featuring both fisticuffs and big “Flash-Bangs”. Finally, just imagine what we would see if Kirk’s TOS romantic escapades were being televised today!
Q2: I like to think of myself as a mainstream gamer, but then you mentioned Ground Combat, which I actually enjoy more than space combat. This certainly places me in a minority. I was also a little disappointed that there was not an accolade for reaching level 20 in all R&D categories (which IS totally worth it, since you have a 99% chance of getting two Superior tech upgrades each time you craft them). I liked the idea of a special Ground Combat event, for you and your BOFFs to complete a certain number of times (14?) in order to earn the reward. Alternatively, Cryptic could borrow from Neverwinter’s ‘Wonders of Gond’ event, and have special crafting supplies drop as a result of combat (space or ground), similar to a dropbox. Earn enough of these, and you can level up the crafting supplies into something useful. Think of the Omega particles event, but with combat required to earn the Omega traces.

Q1 NO! Star Trek is’nt as popular as it is because of all the pew pew and action . It is because of the dialogue only episodes where they dig deep into social issues. One of my favorites is the one where lwaxanna troi had to deal with the loss of a child . Increadible acting by Majel ! The tech and new worlds and even the pew pew is awesome too.

Q2 I would love to see a ground event that involves massive group combat ! I 2 prefer ground to space especially since I use the spacebar mash in ground too 🙂

However there sadly already are a few ground events .
    summer and winter .
I REALLY want to see a ground event / battle zone under water where we can use our floaters and ev suits!

As a role player, I do feel that we are a minority, however I disagree that there is nothing that the developers can do about it. I would direct you guys back to the gpl store at the bartenders in quarks, where we have holo masks of several different npcs. However, this has not been updated since the beginning of the game. GPL is definitely a social currency and I see alot of roleplay potential from that store.

    Great show as always guys!

Q1: I don’t think that the theme and feel of Star Trek has to change to cater to a new audience. Keep with what’s got it to where it is today. To do anything else would be an insult to all the previous series.

Q2: As a “space barbie” player, I want to see more options when it comes to editing uniforms and ships. I would love to be able to use the same call letters as seen in the shows, i.e. NCC 1701-D, etc. More hair options, facial features, and such would make me a happy camper 🙂

Hey guys, Great show as always.

Q1: “This is no time… to argue… about time. We DON’T. HAVE. THE TIME.” – Deanna Troi… That is to say, I don’t think the universe will matter, unless they find a way to bring back Romulus in a post-24th century setting. But I won’t hold my breath. The bigger question is the parallel universe that is CBS All Access. The show will need to be really good to justify me paying for an online version of an otherwise free channel.

Q2: Yes, I feel like STO is made up of minority player bases, min/maxers, casual players, PVP/PVE, etc. There are some people who are hardcore in one category and ignore the rest of the game. To fix it, Cryptic may need to make all aspects of the game equally rewarding. IE: Reputation/fleet marks for completing story missions, account reclaimable event items, or even just a way to skip story missions already played by an ALT.

Q1: Absolutely there is a risk, but to paraphrase another scifi series: it is better to fail at doing the right thing than to succeed in to doing the wrong. We already have the alternative, it’s the JJ-Universe movies. With this new series being a streaming show and not on network television we have the best chance of getting “pure” or “true” Trek… at least for a short time.

Q2: There certainly are minority playerbases, but I’m not sure STO is a collection of them. The majority of players are probably in the game just to enjoy the content, where the minority would be the PvP players and DPS players. As long as cryptic continues to add new content along with maintaining old content I think that alone with help foster diversity. With enough content, players of the same faction might be able to level up taking completely different paths.
