CQ1: I think it spells the end of the willingness of people to create new trek fan content – nobody wants a potential CBS / Paramount lawsuit or Cease and Desist over something created out of and for the love of the franchise

CQ2: Other than specialised builds, any more than 2 or three points spent in “Admiral” grade skills are a waste and can seriously gimp the effectiveness of a ship in its desired role

CQ3: I don’t think STO is cannon, in my head anyway. Too much has been changed, and there is some JJverse influence (hobus, romulans, etc) that, in my own head cannon, has no place in the true star trek universe. I’m not saying that the STO story is inappropriate, I just don’t consider it officially cannon any more than a large proportion of the Trek novel library

    Wonderful show everyone.

cq1) It will reduce it greatly at the very least.
cq2) havent even started to pay attention.
cq3) I would love for it to be canon.

It was great to hear from Attilio, a wonderful tool that skill builder.

Agree on retrain should definitely be free. The game atm heavily work against alt. Most have turned into merely farms in never ending 50-60 and spec points grind. Can’t say for others, but free respec will for sure motivate me to buy a lot more ship to try them out without sacrificing optimal performance, or even just for fun.

    1. I don’t know.
    2. I’m waiting for people to post cookie cutter builds for me to copy. Once the arguments stop and people start complaining there’s not enough variation I’ll know it’s a good time to handle it. So far none of my characters have spent any skill points.
    3.

      Looks like I missed #3.

      3. It is not canon, but it follows canon pretty decently. Only the TV shows and movies are canon per CBS/Paramount. I think the game’s story is true to the show’s feel. Some goofy, some serious, some thoughtful. I would love for CBS/Paramount to make something from the STO story. But until that day, it is a fan fiction that we can all participate in.

The link to the Horizon story is broken.

While I’ve not yet listened to this or the previous podcasts, I’m going to say that the budget levels of Axanar and Horizons are seriously stretching the definition of ‘fan’ production. When you’re spending a six figure sum on a movie, then things are getting rather noticeable.

Thanks for posting, I’ll check into fixing the link for you.

But I would hasten to clarify that Horizon was made with a budget of less than $25k, so not on a par with Axanar in this case.

Anything on screen is first level canon, AKA Memory Alpha. Anything not on screen but from an official source, like STO and the books, is second level canon, AKA Memory Beta. Anything else, is tertiary canon and is usually found on fan sites or part of fan productions as in the case of things like Prelude to Axanar or the multitude of various kitbashes on DeviantArt.

However, as is the case several times in the varying series, Technical Manuals almost always override the on-screen canon for the simple fact that most screenwriters know very little about the actual science of the elements of Trek that they’re writing into the episode or movie. One such example is subspace. Most authors have no idea what it is but it’s laid out in Technical Manuals as core science canon.

Having said that, the hope that STO elements be promoted from secondary to primary canon via indirect reference in the upcoming TV show is probably a lost cause, but it’s hope none the less.
