Subscription Box1Greetings, Captains! You’re listening to Episode 173 of Priority One Podcast, the premier Star Trek Online podcast! This episode was recorded on Thursday, May 8th, 2014 and published on Monday, May 12th, 2014 at PriorityOnePodcast.com!

Happy Monday, Captains! In episode 173 of Priority One Podcast, Jayce, CookieCupcakes, and Elijah brace themselves for a Tempest on the Horizon and jump right into STONews this week. Itching for a new ship? Well, in STONews, Jayce and Elijah review the release of the new Patrol Escort Refit and its Fleet variant. Later, Elijah asks — what if Star Trek Online wasn’t instanced? In this week’s Field Notes, Jayce continues his discussion on Defense.

Later, in our Community Spotlight segment, we have an interview with the creative mind behind Star Trek: Horizon, Tommy Kraft. Star Trek Horizon is another independent film project that takes place a few years after the voyages of the Enterprise NX-01. This is an independent film project you won’t want to miss. And of course as always, we’ll open hailing frequencies and see what’s incoming from you — our listeners.

Topics Discussed

This week’s Community Question

  • Will you be purchasing the new Escort? How do you think it compares to the other — more commonly used escorts in the game (like the Fleet Defiant?)
  • What do you think about dropping server instances in STO and just having 2 or three world servers? What hurdles do you think STO would face? What other benefits do you think this could have to the game?

Honestly? While you keep bringing up choosing between servers, and transferring to different servers permanently, (not instances, servers), I would flat out hate this if it came to STO. A unified server is probably one of the best things STO has to offer.

What if Star Trek Online wasn’t instanced?
Well 2 things: 1 If it wasn’t instanced it would be great for a MASIVE battle, i.e. a PvE (Summer/Winter events)and or PvP event such as(territory control). You’d have over 100+ people taking part in an all out battle. Or even having a “Non Instanced” server for social maps such as ESD, DS9, star bases, etc. since those areas shouldn’t be near empty anyways. At least make the social maps have the “MMO” look and feel per say.
    2. It would be not so great (way too crowded) if you just want to take over an Instance with your fleet mates and run for example: Dyson Battle Ground and run around shooting baby Dinos in the face and collecting Dyson marks. Nothing beats filling up an instance and seeing, In my case, a mob of 20+ people w/boffs with the “Caspian Rising” Tag above their Alts running towards a Red zone turning it into a Blue Zone a minute if not seconds later. All while talking smack in TS and having fun.
By having the servers non instanced you’d lose some of the benefits you’d have if you want to run a private event with your friends/fleet mates. At the same time it would also be a HUGE PUG nightmare if you are trying to accomplish something with your fleet mates and a group of strangers comes around and screws it up for you. Not to mention you can’t switch instances so you’ll be stuck dealing with random Bad PUGs some of which will try to cash in on your hard work.

I’m a huge Defiant and Armitage fan and I have to say that I absolutely Love this ship (Tempest) as well, yeah it was a $30 between both Z-Store and Fleet Version but it was worth it. Love the fact that that has variant ship skins the new boff layout is awesome. I built her load out around the Phaser Dual rear Turret and the Nadion Saturation Bomb Console (which I wish I could put this console into an Armitage), Using Fleet elite Phaser weapons and the doffs to accommodate the weapon buffs. All I can say is that this ship is an EEEEEVIL!! weapon of destruction in the right hands in a PvP match. I have put both my Defiant and Armitage on hiatus to fly this puppy. LOVE this Ship, GREAT JOB Cryptic.

I will not be buying the new ship. I enough free ships to work with that I haven’t felt the need to buy ships.

As for the server situation, I like the way things are now. Maybe upping the pop cap and making space bigger is about the only changes I could see to be done.

“Server wide” or Galactic events would be cool to have happen IF people would participate. But as with Red Alerts, I don’t think they would have much in the way of attendance. I think it would be better that they create some fleet-based end game content that would allow fleets to not only get resources for Fleet projects but also maybe getting the modules to purchase the fleet ships. They can can make sure that only groups formed from the same fleet could do these missions and receive these rewards. I think this would go a long way towards raising thier popularity on those lists.

    1) NO its fed, dont need it.
    2) Leave it like it is, but i would like to see the populations on social zones upped. Our fleet likes to get together for special occasions, we tried to do that at the fleet mine, not nearly enought cap.
    3) Instead of field notes as a title, how about “How to die with honor!”

Wonderful show, welcome to the new sound engineer.

CAN NOT SPEAK enough about how great the program has been recently from P1. And please keep up the good work.

NEW ship. I am really surprise. Is the Jem bug now died? Is the Nicor needed at all? the engs slot while was bad on skills was good with Rom BOFFS. So is the it worth the – crit?

The Server talk again? Really. Are we talking about you want events or teaming because there 2 different things. I can only speak for myself but people can choice to be social. I always try to team up with borg invasion but NO ONE will join me and if they do very really will anyone say a simple “TY”. but its not forever i get that.

As for servers NO. Just NO. Its something that has been good in Star trek. i have a fleet with friends but we are all in different zones, Russia, Germany, UK, US, Canada and Australia (for myself) and the off chances i get my friends to play and they can not join me because of severs.

The reason people never like MMO’s top ten is they dont like star trek. Haters going to hate.

    • sanokskyrat on 2014-05-13

I also point out there are still some bugs with big huge battles.

Even with my new computer the game sloooowwwww right down with battles for new romulus on Devil’s Choice or the 20 man fleet event.

I feel that these issues are still the problem so before we could have a hundreds and hundreds of ships. Lets just get those fix first.

Sorry for any typographic errors or grammars.

I love your comments about wanting Cryptic to make it on a Top 10 Free-2-Play MMO’s but the fact is I doubt Star Trek Online would ever make it on the list.

    Point A
The server software was not designed from the core to the level that’s needed to create a massive MMO world experience. To make Star Trek Online even close to IP in that sense would require a space map spanning several galaxies. That means a lot of unchartered space. Since, Cryptic opted not to create a space environment with their version of the Genesis device there is no new worlds except the ones that Cryptic created

    Point B
Instancing, it’s great for smaller environment but for a huge social experience. Instancing is bad. You need servers that cross-communicate with each other and load-balancing routers and switches. The reason is someone connects to a network/game server and it sticks to that server. The cross-communicate servers will allow for instancing to be removed.. Cryptic did not design the software from the core level to do that.

    Point B
Removing instancing will create overly packed space maps or zones. So, space has to be bigger. So, look at point A

    Point C
Star Trek Online reputation! They already pissed off some STO veterans which is talking about how crappy the game is with all the numerous Nerfs and Bugs. We all agree the reputation system needed to be changed but to Nerf Veterans. It just creates bad sentiment towards STO/Cryptic.

What company or magizine in their right mind would recommend a game that 50%+ of the players distrust the company and writing bad comments about the game? Take a look at the Star Trek Online Forums

    Point D
I played Eve Online and some others. There are the beginner and elite almost invincible players based on skill level. The almost invincible players have the biggest ships. For there to be a epic PvP or PvE you need ships from beginner to EPIC ships. The whole Cryptic balancing and nerfing is removing that.

    Point E
I can go on but I’m tired of it.

I just play off and on to help my fleet mates. I am considering Playstation 4 – Destiny. The ground map is huge and it’s fascinating because I see elements in it. That obvsiously Star Trek Online is missing out plus some aspects of Star Citizen.

I thought Star Trek Online was about seeking new life forms and civilization not blowing each other up every second with the biggest and baddest builds. I thought those builds was meant to take on the almost invincible Borg and difficult Undine.

As to the podcast, Star Trek Online / Cryptic would have to drastically rewrite the core software and update their networks with load-balancing, redundant, and back-end cross-communication games server with a redundant fast database server system.

I can’t say I’m too excited to buy the patrol escort, especially when, so far, there has been no official mention of a trade-in on the fleet variant people have already spent money on. I’m still saving my Zen to to get the Legacy Pack, then the Romulan Dyson Science Destroyer 3-pack. so i’m not looking forward to any other purchases for a long while.

As for instances. In EVE Online the way the server instance issues was solved is that using a massive mainframe gives sections of space their own dedicated server “shards.” This could be applied to STO as well Instead of having the sector space to rule them all the larger, more commonly used Social Zones such as ESD, Drozana, New Romulus, Qo’nos, or DS9 could be moved to dedicated shards while lesser used instances, like story mission planets, or sector space instances can still be instanced on multiple shards to give every captain that personalized “my story” feel.

This will raise the player cap in social zones from 40/60 up to 1-200 easily. Granted the server setup for EVE is much more military grade hardware than most MMOs currently use so the actual instancing numbers may vary depending on upgrades..

  17. LotsOfLore on 2014-05-12

I like the idea of merged instances for world (or rather, galactic!) events!
It would really benefit the social feel of the game. Kudos!

  18. Varzec on 2014-05-12

I think the answer to the large scale events like the Borg Red Alerts, they just need to make them happen the same time on all instances. They need to be made rare and make it a way to earn a epic prize. Maybe make it an weekend event. The Borg invasion happens so often its not special anymore. They need changed out with a new type of world/galaxy events. With the recent story, why can’t they be Undine Attacks? Also, I am probably one of the only people who missed how the DSEs used to chase people in the earlier years of STO.

As for server ideato do more world events, I think were too far in to change. This game wasn’t built for Roleplay in mind, like MXO was. So interacting with story characters just isn’t feasible. I would love to see it, but roleplay is one of the minorities of the community, and they won’t change for the minority.

  19. Towani on 2014-05-12

To me, I play an MMO for the MULTI part. I understand why 5 to 10 years ago games went to instances because networks were poor and people’s computer couldn’t handle 500 toons running around, but in the past 5 to 10 years, how far have computers come? The computer I played AO or EQ on is long gone. My internet connection has improved 10 fold, by computer has improved at lesat 10 fold, as well as my OS and all else. I think it’s time to look at losing some of the instances. I think it would be great to have things like ESD, New Romulas, Bajor, and a few other places improve 10 fold like my computer has. Why are these instances limited to 50 toons? Can’t that be up to 200? 400? 500+? That would bring the Multi and MASSIVE back in the MMO and make STO a game with a future.

Plus, how many times did you see Odo go to Quark’s and yell, “…Damn, wrong instance,” and run back outside and then reenter bar?

    • Berthulf on 2014-05-14

I would love to agree with you, but whilst there have been major improvements in technology and coding, these things take time to filter through. My one and only computer IS 5-10 years old and struggles with any area running 10 or more toons. It simply could not cope with non-instanced maps. But I’m certain a compromise could be made available.

  20. Chiyo Umiku on 2014-05-12

STO is shared game time with my other MMORPG Love, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Over there we have non instanced events that everyone can play, similar to the voth zone. Example, outside of one of the cities a random PVE Battle will light up and everyone drops what they’re doing to go fight. Similar to Matrix Online’s server events. These are random and they have different level difficulties. It’s also how our “Free Mercenary Companies” issue marks to us. This is something that may benefit STO to do more, an event that makes us stop and go play. Like FFXIV, making a non instanced server so EVERYONE can participate, is what STO needs.

I like the instance nature of the game. It would not be fun going in to ESD and seeing 200+ players just idling at the Exchange. My problem with world events is that if you miss them. STO is a global game the instanced nature helps support this. what if our European players were locked to there own server. They have experimented with timed world events. The Defera invasion zone was only available at certain times of the day and week. They also did this with Vault shuttle event. What they saw is people weren’t doing them because they weren’t always there.

Sometimes things come down to performance to immersion. The instance caps are a performance issue. if every step took 3 seconds for you too move then things will suffer.

This is my suggestion is work on improving the fleet action maps for that big epic battle feel.
